I know this is off topic, but thought I'd respond to Just Curious. I resisted for a long time but finally decided it is a good thing to have in case of emergency (like car breakdown on the highway). You don't need a contract to have a cell phone. I have a cheap, basic model (no camera, no Internet, no apps, no nothing) I bought at Wal-Mart; I buy air-time/minutes cards as needed to keep the service active. It averages out to less than $10/month, and I've never run out of minutes.

I have a blackberry provided by my employer, my wife has a month to month phone with Verizon and my son has a prepaid phone. I'll probably never sign another cell phone contract from here on out.

Cell phones in the US should work like they do in Europe, buy a phone that you want and take it to any provider you want with no contract. Not happy with your provider tell them to go pound sand and try someone else. Sure you have to pay for the phone and don't get the discount but then again the plans in Europe don't cost nearly as much as they do in the US and chances are you get more for your money. As for cell phone service, quality and options the US is seriously lacking when compared to Europe. Don't believe the marketing, the US isn't on the cutting edge when it comes to cell technology.

Bottom line, we pay more for subpar service and most Americans say "thank you can I have another?"

In addition to horrible and expensive phone contracts, our internet speeds lag way behind Europe and Japan.

But we're number 1.

We're on the cutting edge of being bank rolled by China.

Default other talent of USA

another thing we are on the cutting edge with is making no talent fools be top news stories- I mean really- who gives a f**k if Ellen and Kara leave Idol? who cares if Lindsay is in jail? who cares if Oprah had a secret life as a teenage prostitute? well, that one maybe- I want my $20 back.
