Joe, You just recently gave up a chance at 5 millon dollars a year and incentives worth up to 3 million more. I guess that is chump change for you, maybe a slap in the face. Joe keep in mind you were a career loser as a manager before the economic engine known as the Yanks put great players in your lap. I am not sure, maybe you are just tired of managing. It certainly was a great run, but don't let me believe the cash was not enough, after all I am of the opinion that managing the Yanks is a great honor, and any price tag with it (even $50 thousand a year) should be enough.
Are you afraid to be underpaid? Is there a possibility you are fearful of losing your playoff streak?
Well whatever enjoy your retirement and your legacy-- a 894-932 record prior to the Yanks and the 2004 meltdown...

I don't think the Yankee organization tried hard enough to retain Torre. It wasn't the pay but the 1 year contract and the unwillingness to negotiate. The organization basically gave Torre their offer and said take it or leave it.
The contract was not open for discussion. Even though I feel the contract amount was fair especially since the team choked again, the way they presented it to him was disrespectful. I think they knew he would turn it down. If you really want someone back, you discuss the options and listen to feedback. You negotiate. I think Torre wanted a multi-year contract again. A 1 year contract would've had him on the chopping block all season.
All that said, Torre could've made $16 million in two years, as long as the Yanks made it to the World Series in 2008. The amount of money offered would've kept him the highest paid manager in baseball history. I'm grateful for what Torre did in 12 years but it's time to move on. Hire a manager for around 3 million a year and take what you saved from Torres offer and get another good pitcher.
As far as the veterans on the team who may not re-sign because Torre isn't managing anymore, suck it up or take a hike. I'm tired of these players asking for big money and special requests. (Rivera, Posada, A-Rod) Give them a fair offer. If they don't like it, they can follow in Torres footsteps. I'd rather get some more young guys in there anyway and watch them come up and grow.
The Yankees should avoid huge contracts(A-Rod) and get back to the pitching.
I think Joe Girardi would do a great job managing that team. As long as they let him manage. He'll get them back to the basics. Bunting, stealing, hit and runs etc. Time will tell. GO YANKS!!
