‘Pure waste’
Editor:
Why do Wallingford’s taxes go up every year (40 percent in the last two)? Read on, wake up – and get angry:
The Wooding-Caplan caper was nothing compared to what is going on in town. Wooding-Caplan: paid $1.5 million. Offered at $409,000; Wooding-Caplan: Three-year feasibility study (the Rose report) cost $50,000/ignored by the town council.
390 Center Street: Assessment $380,000, paid $425,000; 390 Center St.: Feasibility study, $1,900 — state grant was feasible; 390 Center St. demolition cost estimate: $53,000.
Simpson school: sold for $100,000 —a realtor’s appraisal: $1 million.
Community Lake: 1979 dam breach; replacement cost estimate: $800,000. The town balked. Present estimate: in the millions, now disallowed by the state, regardless Silver Co. bldg. offer to buy for back taxes: $125,000 — turned down by the town council.
Survey of private land – North Farms Rd., $12,000 Why?
School renovation: $72 million. Roofs and furnaces not included — cost: $20 million.
1300 Barnes Rd.: Town foreclosed in 1946. Habitat for Humanity showed an interest. Council balks. Can you believe this?
Police Station: RFP out now to expand on to Wooding-Caplan. Do we have a direction for anything?
CRRA (the trash plant) — paid for with tax money. A private firm has the option to purchase it come 2010 for $1, plus we haven’t had anyone represent Wallingford on the board in at least 10 years. Ask why not, and one pops up. How’s that!
American Legion bldg.:1990 paid $190,000. Demolish? Talk of selling it — for a dollar? Let’s wait and see.
Add this up. The grand total: $24 million. Money for nothing, just pure waste.
“The town voter has a memory span of 60 days." Prove this wrong on Nov. 6th — only 22 days. The choice is yours. Do you want a shining star or someone who can lead us into the 21st century?
