A few years ago, I purchased a flag pole for my property. I've always displayed a flag on my home since becoming a homeowner but wanted to display the flag on a pole. I made sure to learn proper flag etiquette in order to fly my flag with honor and respect.
Upon presidential or gubernatorial order, the flag is to be flown at half staff to show mourning for someone who has died. That person can be a political leader or a soldier. Also, national tragedies such as 9/11 can cause the order to be given.
Last night Connecticut learned of another soldier killed in Iraq. Governor Rell will most likely order all flags to be flown at half staff today and every day until that soldier comes home and is buried.
I don't understand why with so many Americans dying in Afganistan and Iraq why we just don't leave our flags at half staff. We lower our flags when we lose a soldier from our state, but what about the rest of our country? We're losing soldiers daily.
Last October I decided to leave my flag at half staff. It's been a year now. Until we stop losing soldiers, my flag will stay at half staff. To me it serves as a reminder that we are at war and we're paying for it with our soldiers lives.
When Rell gives the order to lower our flags, mine will already be there.
