ONE SMALL WORLD

The sun arises, shows his fulgent face
And gazes at the land and all the ocean
’Cross ninety-three million miles of frigid space

Without a jot of feeling or emotion.
He sees the people as they might see ants
Creating a commotion. He’s a notion

To shout to them across that vast expanse:
“Hey, folks, now listen! Earth is in big trouble;
Though, if you’re smart, you still might have a chance

To fix her. You live in a fragile bubble
In an expanding universe. You know?
This was proved by Edwin Powell Hubble.

It’s like a jumbo swelling ball of dough
With galaxies receding from each other.
Some force just makes it grow and grow and grow!

In any case, it seems you want to smother
Your sphere of plants and animals, just choke
The living daylights out of her. Oh, brother!”

And then the sun sank down, a yellow yolk
Becoming red, and left without a trace.
The moon arose and shown on all the folk,

Her face quite pale watching the human race
Despoiling one small world in every place.
