While never technically a Police fan, I grew up around their music and am very familiar with their discography. I was a bit surprised that they chose to slow down a few of their more famous songs, especially Don't Stand so Close to Me - This slower rendition didn't work for me at all, but this was ultimately an inconsequential bother. The show was fantastic. The weather was absolutely perfect, the mosquitos never materialized as I feared, the band sounded tight and rehearsed, and the sound setup was first rate. They also looked like they were having a lot of fun on the stage, which seemed to translate well to the audience. Everyone there had a great time.
Tweak Diddy and Awesome Man in front of us were really getting down - here were two men, in at least their late 40's, unabashedly dragging off a misshapen, smoky white "cigar," coughing clouds of the stuff onto the lucky patrons in front of them, and rocking out as if they were still in their 20's....which they most certainly were the last time they saw The Police tour in 1986.
All in all, to a non-police fan, the concert rocked. I am really happy that I got to see them. One note: The opening band, Fiction Plane, had a lead singer who not only seemed to be trying to sound like Sting, but who was succeeding quite well in doing so. Post-concert research has yielded the fact that Fiction Plane's lead singer is a certain Joe Sumner, whose father is indeed a certain Sting of The Police.
