Head Splitting CRAP music???
especially at 3am - or when I'm pumping my gas at 3.29 per (i'm aggravated enough by that)- and what makes "you" think you can blast down my street to at 70 MPH with speakers so loud you rattle my window panes??? - and scare the crap outta my dog and make her bark like nuts.
Meriden is getting worse, ruder, louder and dirtier - now there's fireworks debris all over the street to go along with the empty cig packs and Mac Donalds fry boxes....
The article in the Record about the schools being behind on the reporting of their progress to comply with "NCLB" - not that I agree with THAT piece of crap legislation from the Thugs in Washington...but still - another pimple on Meridens face.
Maybe because I've been away from Meriden for awhile and you don't have to go far to see how lovely places can be.....Will Meriden EVER get its.....sshhhtufff...together?

well...Glad they're having the concert and fireworks anyways :)

What? You don't love "the game" or "ghostface killa" or whatever other stupid name these "artists" call themselves?
C'mon, don't you realize that to be a "gangsta" you need to listen to ridiculously loud "music" at 3AM (and all other times as well) while driving your metallic lime green '87 Honda Civic that sounds like a lawnmower? Let's not forget that your drivers' seat must be parallel to the ground so that you can drive while laying down. That way, your pants won't fall to your ankles, perhaps causing an accident, because you don't know you look like an absolute moron in pants that are 10 sizes too big. Hey, it's jailhouse fashion, it's gotta be "gangsta", right?
Seems to me the LAST place I'd wear pants like that would be in jail, but hey, to each their own if you know what I'm saying. On the plus side, I do get a great laugh whenever I see one of these people on the road at a red light or whatever. I laugh myself silly. Look on the bright side, one day, these people will be running our country, then we will reminisce about the "good-'ol days" of George Bush.....Ouch

Im almost leaning towards agreeing for the reinstatement of the draft and get these degenerates in the military. Maybe then they will appreciate how good they really have it a get some dicipline in their lives. Too many of our younger generation growwing up are taking our freedoms for granted and dont understand what red white and blue stands for. They just don't know how fortunate thay are not to have had to participate in a Gettysburg, MarketGarden, Omaha, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Ardennes etc. So many of our generation have died so these degenerates can have the freedom to be degenerates. Its a shame and a slap in the face to our Vets IMO to what our society is becoming.
Not to mention some of these degenerates get better benefits than our Vets.

Let me just say that I wish I joined this forum in July. I would have replied to the comments about hip hop artists/sagging pants displayed by cantspeakspanish  Well here's my chance. Since your preference isn't hip-hop or sagging pants "which is so called Jail house appareal" maybe you would be better off in Farmington, Greenwich or Westport. Oh, I'm sorry....if you could actually afford to live there you would be there huh?? I'm sure "The Game" and "Ghoseface Killa" is enjoying their multi-million dollar homes. Tune in to "Cribs" on MTV to catch a glimpse. Well since you can't sit in a 1.5 millon dollar home I guess you have to enjoy the scene that you "feel" Meriden has to offer you. How dare you isolate a situation! Is that all you see? OR is that all you choose to focus on? I'd rather see someone with sagging pants because that is their fashion preference versus seeing someone in sagging pants becuase they cannot pull them up due to lazziness, lounging on the sofa, drinking a budweiser, and eating a TV dinner all week. Touchy huh? Take your blinders off!!! Meriden is diverse and if you don't appreciate that stay inside or move to another town so you can "feel" safe but yet may say one day "This is a quite neighborhood, I never knew my neighbor was crazy. We always played golf together with our wives." Why don't you try talking to the so called guy that has the '87 Honda that sounds like a lawnmower instead of "assuming" he's just up to no good and you're better than him. Who knows?? He just might be at your next family reunion...Meriden is diverse and he may snatch up one of your relatives and be over for Sunday dinner. Hope you like Arroz Con Pollo!

Just to be clear - I never said anything about baggy pants or desireing to live in some white-bread yuppie suburb. I was talking about NOISE pollution - along with garbage in the streets and just general litter and trash.
Meriden has some beautiful old houses and building that are now just garbage. Its not a pretty inviting city...keeping it clean and lowering the racket can help make it more enjoyable to visit or live here.
Since your preference isn't hip-hop or sagging pants "which is so called Jail house appareal" maybe you would be better off in Farmington, Greenwich or Westport.
Have you ever even lived in one of those towns? I can tell. You have no idea about where the upper class live. If you did you would have named Katonah, NY, Southampton, NY and New Caanan, CT which make those towns you named seem like Paupersville. Ever hear of Jupiter Island, Florida? Thugs with a paltry couple million dollars can't even live there. They can't afford to. Why don't you look that up next time Cribs goes to a commercial. You're mind has been melted by MTV.
The people of Meriden, no matter what their financial situation is, have a right to live in peace and quiet without thugs disturbing the peace. So, only the affluent towns have a right to complain about noise? The so-called poor people just have to suck it up? Is that what you think? If you think people complain about taxes here, that's nothing in comparison. We hate it even more. We don't like to part with our money any more than any one else does.
Being able to afford to live somewhere and choosing to live somewhere are two different things. Not everyone with money wants to live in a clique neighborhood. Is that your dream? Why do you think everyone has the same dream you do?
You sound like you admire people who make millions selling songs that glorify violence. I am sure this "Gooseface Killa", or whatever his name is, that you admire so much is an excellent role model for children. He's done wonders for you already.
Having money means absolutely nothing to anyone but you. Having honor and integrity are what matters. But you have no idea about that do you? Oh I know...you want to be a rapper when you grow up! Aw! That's special. You and every other kid out there. Either that or a baseball player. You've got a better chance at being a baseball player since you're already out in left field. But for now, you probably pay rent or a mortgage just like everyone else does. Only you go home and watch Cribs and drool. Wipe the drool off your lip next time you come to this forum.
Touchy huh?
More sterotypes. You seem to have so many of them yet you hate that others have their own perceptions too. You have something against someone who goes out and pays for his beer, his tv dinner, and his sofa and then sits there all night lounging? That's lazy? So you only like people who choose your kind of high fashion for your kind of reasons, and you despise those "lazy" people who drink beer all night watching football on their couch? Being lazy on your own dime is fine with me. Being lazy on my dime is a problem. I don't have to like people who act like, dress like, smell like, and look like thugs. The same way you don't have to like people who drink beer and lounge around.
Take your blinders off!!! Meriden is diverse and if you don't appreciate that stay inside or move to another town so you can "feel" safe but yet may say one day "This is a quite neighborhood, I never knew my neighbor was crazy. We always played golf together with our wives."
So to you diversity includes people who disturb other's peace with loud music, loud cars, or loud anything? That's breaking the law. But that's OK to you? It seems in your mind people who break the law should be included in the diversity of a neighborhood or treated better than the hard working people who actually play by the rules. I have a right to feel safe in my neighborhood just like every other diverse person in this town does. Diversity is about being your own individual within the confines of what society has set forth in its laws.
Why don't you try talking to the so called guy that has the '87 Honda that sounds like a lawnmower instead of "assuming" he's just up to no good and you're better than him. Who knows?? He just might be at your next family reunion...Meriden is diverse and he may snatch up one of your relatives and be over for Sunday dinner. Hope you like Arroz Con Pollo!
He is up to no good. He's already broken several noise ordinances, state motor vehicle law, and federal EPA law for messing with his emission system which includes the muffler! So this guy whose going to snatch my relative? Is he the guy who I play golf with? My crazy neighbor? And then you stereotype every Hispanic, Latino, and Spanish person by thinking that's all we do is eat Arroz Con Pollo and steal your daughters?
!Es una locura! ?Dimelo porque estas aqui? No seas tan estupido. ?Que mas da? Lo que importa es que tipo de persona eres. !Malditos yankis!
How's that for diversity? I can flame you in two languages. It's been fun but I have to go now. Someone just offered some arroz con pollo to my daughter...

Hmmm...looks like I hit a cord with my comments. Good! Noise pollution huh? If that was your only reason for posting your comment then it should have only been related to that. No comments about sagging pants, hispanics or hip hop music. YOU are the one who isolated your comment to hispanics not me. That isolates a situation to ONLY that single group of individuals because that is who you chose to focus on. My comment would have been different if you would have just said that there is noise pollution and disagreed with that only. It became offensive when you linked it to a specific group of individuals. Seems to me you are more intersted in your neighbors life more than your own. BTW, read my comment again because you truly misinterpreted my last few sentences. Maybe because you were so offended that you only read what you wanted to and missed my point totally.
lovemylocs,
Your last few sentences? About the Hispanic man snatching my relatives and having arroz con pollo on Sunday, or the ones where you hate lazy people who drink beer while lounging on their couch? Oh wait...maybe it was the ones where you apologized to Hispanic people for implying they drive 87 honda's, eat arroz con pollo, and snatch up people's relatives. I don't recall anyone here mentioning anything about Hispanics. I hate those noisy cars as much any gringo.
When you added that food comment you showed your assumption that we were talking about Hispanics. We were talking about rude, obnoxious, and degenerate behavior all of which we do not like and don't have to like. That does not make anyone here intolerant. I do not and will not tolerate law breaking thugs. The clothing is a uniform all of which signifies a lifestyle. A man in a suit is taken a certain way that is different than a man deliberately wearing clothes which obviously do not fit properly. That's not racist. That's poking fun. And there is nothing wrong with that.
So now please explain yourself a little bit better so there is no misinterpretation of your comments. Are your simply trying to get people to like that crowd? To let people know that some people who engage in baggy pants, low riding cars, loud mufflers, compact car scene are just nice people who are being discriminated against? Like ATVs that ride down the street illegally and tear up trails? Or snowmobiles that ride down snowy roads? That sort of thing? You want us to just give them a chance, change the law, and such? So what is it? How can you justify that obnoxious behavior? Really...

lovmylocs...so....you think its just white people who are irritated by Meridens noise pollution?....and you assume that white people are not also creating noise pollution? - when did this thread become racial...and as a white person - I kinda resent the implication I should go live in a white suburb...or that as a white person I don't actually like diversity, that I don't actually find different kinds of people interesting.
This thread is about having common courtesy for other people..and respecting the place you live...like they say - "don't **** where you eat"
Well said catnap. Noise pollution is a universal problem. Race has nothing to do with it.
The dress code issues were also mentioned in this thread and unfortunately it would seem that also became racial by loc's comments. I've seen poor dress on every race.
Just because someone does not like the way someone dresses, or thinks that a particular dress style is indicative of a lifestyle, does not make them racist either. Dressing a certain way will make people interact with you accordingly. Appropriate dress is universal and without bias. There is no big conspiracy. Every profession has a uniform. When one wears the clothes of a gangsta one will be treated accordingly.

It is interesting to note that people form their impression of you within the first fifteen to thiry seconds. The wise people make the impression and are open to changing their mind after a conversation or two takes place though. A mis-formed opinion of someone based on their attire can be negative though.
As part of a fundraising campaign four years ago a man, unshaven, smoke tarnished mustaches, patched flannel shirt, work boots and skragly hair drop by for a meeting. On first glance I wondered what this individual could possibly contribute if he couldn't purchase a new shirt. However treating him like all other high level donors paid off. The gentleman was a high net worth business owner who owned a very large lumber company in Vermont. He was also the largest donor to that campaign. Treating him differently or not making the time to speak with him at length about the campaign could have been a quarter of a million dollar mistake.
How people dress according to society standards has become important. It's all about identifying with a certain social group or it's about being different. We need to ensure that we treat people as individuals and give them a chance no matter what they are wearing. Judgements are made through conversation and through their actions not what they are wearing.
Scouter! Where the hell have you been? You should contribute more!
Your opinion in the matter is 100% on the money. I could not have said it better myself. Sure people make a snap judgement based upon the cover. Everyone does it. That's how a doctor can fake being a doctor simply by wearing a white lab coat and a stethoscope. But it is truly wise to realize that it is a snap judgement and further investigation is needed to determine the truth. That goes for a man in a suit or a man in a flannel. The man in the suit could be Kenneth Lay! Watch your pension!
Crooks and good people come in all shapes and sizes.
However, as was brought up before, a person with a loud muffler could be the nicest person around, sure. But that does not mean that person's deed, breaking noise ordinances, should be overlooked or treated any differently. Obviously that person can't be all that nice if that person has no respect for another's peace and quiet.

Living on a populated street in Meriden noise is certainly a factor. Nothing I hate more at 1:00 in the morning is the sound of a motorcycle club with illegal mufflers roaring down the street or a car outside with the windows closed and vibrating to rap music at excessive levels.
Both activities are against our city codes but what is the motivation for the police department to enforce noise code violations? The maximum fine for the first offense is $77.00 which in todays day in age is hardly considered a fine at all. Granted if the noise continues the individual in violation could be fined up to $500 a day. But in terms of immediate pay off the police department would do better writting speeding tickets then to seek out and pull people over for noise. Involve the police department if you hear someone in violation. If they are asked they should do something about it because they are the only enforcement agency in the city that can take action. Should they ignore noise... no. Raise the initial fine amount for the first offense and people will only make the mistake of making a loud noise once.
In the city code it says:
§ 141-3. Noise measurement procedures.
Section C...
(2) No person shall cause or allow the emission of impulse noise in excess of 80 dB peak sound pressure level during the nighttime to any Residential Noise Zone.
(3) No person shall cause or allow the emission of impulse noise in excess of 100 dB peak sound pressure level at any time to any zone.
Also it goes on to list prohibited activities:
§ 141-6. Prohibited noise activities.
A. General prohibition. It shall be unlawful for any person to make, continue or cause to be made or continued any loud, unnecessary or unusual noise or any noise which either annoys, disturbs, injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of others.
B. Enumeration of prohibited acts. Each of the following acts, among others, is declared unlawful and is prohibited; but this enumeration shall not be deemed to be exclusive:
(1) Animals. The keeping of any animal or bird which by causing frequent or longcontinuednoise shall disturb the comfort of repose of any person in the vicinity.
(2) Blowing horns, etc. The sounding of any horn or signal device on any automobile, motorcycle, bus, streetcar or other vehicle while not in motion, except as a danger signal if another vehicle is approaching apparently out of control, or if in motion only as a danger signal after or as brakes are being applied and deceleration of the vehicle is intended; the creation by means of any such signal device of any unreasonably load or harsh sound; and the sounding of such device for an unnecessary and unreasonable period of time. (So the Democratic "parade" through town with their signs attached to their cars with the honking to get peoples attention was probably not a legal activity for them to participate in or approve of. If they pulled a permit for the "parade" it would be exempt from this rule and honking would be allowed.)
(3) Building operations. The erection (including excavating), demolition, alteration or repair of any building, or the excavation of streets and highways, other than between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the weekdays, except in the case of urgent necessity in the interest of public safety, and then only with a permit from the appropriate municipal department, board or commission, which permit may be granted for a period not to exceed three days while the emergency continues.
(4) Exhaust discharge. The discharge into the open air of the exhaust of any steam engine, stationary internal combustion engine, motor vehicle or motorboat engine except through a muffler or other device which will effectively prevent loud or explosive noises therefrom.
(5) Radios, portable radios, cd players, etc. The playing of any radio, portable radio, CD player, phonograph or any musical instrument in such a manner or with such volume, particularly during the hours between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in any office, or in any dwelling, hotel or other type of residence, or of any person in the vicinity.
(6) Shouting, singing, etc. Yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public street, particularly between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., or at any time or place so as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of person in any office or in any dwelling, hotel or other type of residence, or of any person in the vicinity.
(7) Steam whistles. The blowing of any steam whistle attached to any stationary boiler except to give notice of the time to begin or stop work or as a warning of fire or danger, or upon request of proper city authorities.
§ 141-9. Authority to issue citations; violations and penalties.
A. The provisions of this chapter may be enforced by citation, in addition to other remedies. The following persons have authority to issue citations for violations pursuant to these sections: The Police Department.
B. Any person in violation of any of the sections of this chapter shall be fined in an amount not to exceed $77. Each day that such violation continues after the time for correction of the violation given in an order shall constitute a continuing violation, and the amount of the fine shall be doubled for each day said violation continues, said fine not to exceed $500 per day.

Yes ,but in order to look @ it from as many angles as possible, and trying to be the least biased as can be,I will.So ,here goes ; If I was into Hip-Hop ,and hd to wear pants many sizes too big and listen to awful lyrics(words to songs) at high levels , I am fly right ? No,I am doing something bad. Yes,bad. My attitude: "what am I proving ? How fly I am ? No, how stupid I am . Not sure where this is going. But I think I have an idea. To me, people can do whatever they want to their bodies, their hair, and wear whatever they want. Hip-hoppers, or whatever they are called, wear what they want to. Its their right. And its my right to laugh at them for it. Its not just hip-hoppers. Anyone who leaves their house looking like a tornado hit their closest, looking like a clown, asks for it. Nothing wrong with a little laughter. Clothing is not a protected element like race, religion, creed, gender, sexuality, etc. Its the one thing left we can joke around about without the PC crowd getting their knickers in a bind.
The idea of trying to be liked by changing the easy parts of one's life, clothing, hair, cars, et al, goes to a higher concept of self-worth. The hard part is changing who you are or finding out who you are. Doing the hard work will make whatever it is you have become irrelevant. People will like you for you , not for your possessions.

Trying to find a place to reply lol Ok the music shouldnt be soooo loud at 3am that is messed up but the person who wrote about what type of music, car, fashion that should not have been put on one culture as all cultures are wearing that style but hey it is Meriden isn't it this man is just a prime example of hate thy neighbor and I am a white girl who isn't into the ghetto fashion but I believe in wear what you want to wear remember when you were young you wore and did your hair to the unliking of the elders, What annoys me is I move back to Meriden to find out I am close to a half way house even though the felons have been nice but to find out within 10miles of me are 50 registered sex offenders and I am not in a puss infected neighborhood I am around where Dr Groome had his office or the Meriden Fed Credit Union. So stop complaining about how someone dresses and start acting on the real subjects at hand like taxes, education and etc and to ask nicely hey if youre in this area please try and keep it down. Warring over idiocy same thing Bush did with Iraq.

You had this correct from the get go...the town is a dump and getting worse by the day, if some of the same people who defend this area so vehimitley would do what you did and actually get away from it for a while to actually experience something different, I think their attitude might change a little bit.
Another thing I'm tired of is using "diversity" as a shield to be ignorant, disrespectful, and rude.
Diversity is about ALL people...I have the right to not enjoy people leaving garbage in my lawn, hanging out in my driveway, blasting music at 3AM, or screaming at the top of their lungs in the middle of the street.
It so happens that the people I see doing this in Meriden are mostly but not limited to "hip-hop" types.
Where I used to live until I was robbed and got the hell out of there, people, mostly kids would literally cut through the "woods", and down my drive-way within 5-8 feet of my car and home to get to a convienince store/gas station. And it didn't matter if I was in the drive way or had the dog out, this is just where they felt they should walk.
From time to time I'd ask them to please not cut through here and they would look at me like I was crazy.
Often times asking, where should I walk then? or explaining this is just faster for them to get home...these were hispanic, black, white, boys and girls....from fashion princess to gangster-wanna-bes.
It was beyond their comprehesion that someone wouldn't want people trespassing on their property. They just didn't get it.
My living there, and asking them not to cut through, in their mind, was actually inconvieniencing them.
Have fun Meriden, you are a town of no salvation...the youth is oblivious to life, the adults can't speak the english language (and I'm talking about white people) "know what I'm sayin, Yo?"
If this is the diversity you want....you can have it....let me know how it works out.
Do you have anything else nice to say?

Why so nasty about diversity? Sounds like a case of white flight syndrome to me. I feel sorry for you that your home was broken into. That's a violating feeling that most people unfortunately know from experience. You could have joined your neighborhood association and helped form a neighborhood watch.
Wherever you've moved to, I hope the neighbors you got to investigate better this time are all on the same page with you. Where did you move to - an all white, English speaking area that is going to make sure diversity doesn't move in? Look at what happened in Cheshire - very little "diversity" there yet it was one of their own who has been charged with murdering the Pe****. Same goes for the 94 year old killed recently somewhere else in CT. Although that not to say that crooks always do their dirty work in their home towns; obviously they don't always.
Kids growing up in the same town are going to have peer challenges to face, income and ethnicity aside. Southington has a druggie problem, Cheshire underaged drinking, Wallingford has its woes with bomb scares, fights and drinking too. Meriden kids are no better, no worse. There is a Meriden Police Officer who studied the inner city crime rate and it is lower than other parts of the city. I heard him give a report during the Meriden City Center Initiative hearings.

How am I nasty about diversity??...and why do you just assume I'm white?
"One of their own." What does that mean? Doesn't sound very accepting or diverse to me.
You're a racist. Plain and simple.
When my house gets robbed in the middle of the afternoon....I move.
Call it what you want.
One of their own meant "a resident of Cheshire" not another white person. It was clear from her text.
Look...I don't know where you came from, but right now you can't just come barging in here and start calling people racist when they did nothing to deserve that. Collie is certainly not a racist. She's been sticking up for races of all kinds and for many impoverished people in this town, white black latino or otherwise.
I understand where you're coming from neveragain, but you gotta relax a bit. You seem to dislike diversity because you insinuate that it brings about crime. That was what collie was talking about. That you have crime in all types of neighborhoods not just diverse ones.
Meriden is not that bad, really.
OK, Here I go...I am new here to Meriden. And I agree with Catnip and Eds,but I think Neveragain had some valid points too. The other one was kind of ignorant,so I wont go there.
I moved here because I heard this place was being "revitalized"..Yeah RIGHT!
I have very rude "hispanic" neighbors ,who seem to think it is their God given right to make me listen to their music and cars at all hours of the night! YEP I'm WHITE.You got that right. AND I come from a very nice place, where people RESPECT others!
Why,you ask, did I move here? Let me tell you why. I helped my BF get his first home. this was where he could afford to start out. We didn't want to be too far from our families, and wanted to give a new place a chance. Possibly the biggest mistake we ever made. I hear guns, fireworks, loud yelling, screaching tires, and immpossibly loud music, which I can't believe anyone would want to subject theirselves to those kind of decibles! They will be deaf by the time the are 30.
I was married to a Hispanic man,who I'm sorry to say passed, and I miss him sorely. He thought MOST, notice I said most?,Hispanics here in CT were the rudest and most disrespectful people he had ever met. This coming from a man who was Hispanic! You can't call that racism. His Mother once came up from Fl to visit, and said of some "hispanics " she met here,"If I was their mother,I would have beat their A--es for that!" etc. She was VERY upset at what she saw here, appalled might be a beter word.
And I don't give a S--T what anyone wears, like Eds said it's our right to laugh,if you look like a clown! but I DO get upset seeing someones underware hanging out! NO it isn't OK to do that! It's nasty and disrespectful. I really don't want to see your crack,or your thong either! Please spare me.
Alls I want is to try to enjoy what little I have left of my life in peace. I'm tired of the cops chasing people through our yard at night, tired of the loud noises my neighbors think it's their right to make. If I had a choice as to where I could live right now it wouldn't be here, but here is what I have for now. I am not going to give up without a fight.
AND yes I TRIED asking my neighbors to keep it down some, nicely I might add, they laughed in my face, called me a bad name in spanish, which I will NOT repeat here, but YES I did understand what they said, they thought because I was "white" I didn't (who's racist and ignorant there?) and then proceeded to get even louder! Hell before it got this bad, I had even sent cookies over for the kids at christmas, which I baked, and a cake on Easter,so DON'T TELL ME I"M RACIST! I'm just ****ed off big time!.
The thing is they have no idea I speak spanish...so the last laugh might just be on them.
AND BTW? I like to sit and watch my TV and hear it,I don't drink because I'm ill,but If I wanted to sit and be lazy on my couch,I work hard and deserve to do what I want in my free time. It's not like I can enjoy my yard with how loud my neighbors are! sometimes I can't even hear my TV!
And the funny thing is,other neighbors hate what is happening too,but are afraid of reprisals from these hoodlums..and the police are no help.
I think their parents should be ashamed of how their children act. But all I see is encouragement from them too! So how can you teach them right from wrong if their own parents don't?
I'm just disgusted and sad that the world is coming to this. and it's only getting worse.
