View Full Version : NO Fireworks in Meriden this year
I just heard that there will be NO fireworks in Meriden for lack of funds!
If this is true, then I would gladly pay more in taxes to be able to do this. <-- 6/27 update Praise God it's not true
According to Grucci Brothers, a city-class display runs anywhere from 5,000-15,000. Incidentals like permits, security, fire department, travel and expenses are probably around 10,000 to 15,000 more. So let's make it an even 50,000 for nice round numbers.
All we need is 50 sponsors to spend $1,000 and we have a display. I am sure area merchants could easily spend that money. Advertising costs for running a print ad are more than that. Even some private individuals like me could afford that. My check is ready.

A quick call to the City Manager's office confirmed that fireworks are scheduled to go off at sunset on Tue, July 3. Raindate is July 5.

I called City Hall clerk to city council office; they called Parks and Rec. Fireworks being held July 3rd as usual. I think there would be a revolution if they didn't. First thing that comes to mind for me is the consultant fee paid by the city for a phone poll re conservation and development in Meriden. Thousands spent to call 400 people. I'm sure others would come up with similar spending examples and there would be a public outcry if we didn't have fireworks.
Thanks for clearing this up...I posted an update to the original post. I could not change the topic text unfortunately.

:o :o :o Thx MiD_MaN, I personally wouldn't have done nothing but FLAME this NON-EDsiter, especially if they don't have a IM link , just to stop their Rant or Crying. Note to responders: besides bio and IM and anything else [ like grammar , punctuation , tone , ETC] click on the Users name and read their posts , as a type of background check on their overall attitude... running on right now....
Going to Black Rock to get the yacht ready for the GRUCCI's on the 4 th - EDs is NOT invited ! enjoy Castle Craig LEGAL fireworks and Light up the Country , coast to coast.

Hope every one is happy now that weve blown another ten or fifteen grand up in smoke.
I don't know why Meriden continues to do this when you can go to many venus around the state to see fireworks not paid for by taxes.

Didn't anyone get enough from our own naiborhood displays to make you happy? Around Chaimberlin Hwy/Lockwood St, they didn't stop till way after ten pm. The city is talking about stopping trash pick up, and you folks are worried about fireworks??? How shallow can we get?
So what if we get burried in trash, but for heavens sake give us fireworks!!!

Since I pay hefty property taxes, just increased by $1,600., I think the city can do both fireworks and continue to pick up my garbage. I also think they should have been able to not cut the library hours; our library is now only open 11-5 most days and completely shut Fridays and Sundays. I complained to my city councilor about the drastic increase in my property taxes and was told I get all kinds of services for my taxes. I responded, what services? It would be a different story if we had universal health care; now that would be a service I could use. I sent (almost done) five kids K-8 to private school, basically because the public schools in Meriden are failing and have been for years. I haven't had health insurance for years. For the money I would have paid I bought my kids a decent education instead. I don't begrudge the seniors a center or things of that nature and I don't begrudge the public schools either. We are going to have to pay for garbage removal in the inner city next year I bet. The biggest service I get is higher tax bills.

1. tax-yeah thats what you pay to live in a town -remember when wallingford used to be a cheaper place to live?
2. garbage - wah - far too long the inner city people have had that perk - join the rest of the city and pay up. i suggest Williams Sanitation, they do a great job for us paying customers
3. fireworks- do you really think the $$ spent on this event is going to make any differece in the budget? don't look for something the whole city can enjoy - focus on the waste (not garbage, see item 2]
I apologize for the misinformation. I made a simple mistake in listening to a what a neighbor told me and reacting to it. I took my neighbor at their word. I did clearly say "If this is true..." And I then made a correction to that in a later posting. I could not change the title unfortunately.
