Anyone remember when the EXPO started coming to the Downtown area? The streets would be blocked off, West Main and Colony St. I rather enjoyed the EXPO in the begining years. The smell of Fried Dough and all those goodies to eat. My favorite was The OLD FASHIONED ICECREAM wagon. Oh my goodness! One day mom and I ate about three cones each they were sooooo good. And that's where I first saw the invisible dog leashes...I was mistified, I realllly thought that there was a real dog and I bugged my mom until no end to get me one BUT...mom knew that that was not a true thing and later I was depleted to find out she was right. It had me going, LOL! Anyway, then trouble kept happening with fights and stuff...and no more EXPO, sniff, sniff! All good things come to an end I suppose. Not sure if this was a historical thing but it is a memory...

that reminds me of the Danbury STATE Fair and I didn't even get to discover it until my son was 5 yrs old [ sheltered life in Cos Cob & Rye/Port Chester] P.T. Barnum was proud of Jumbo then. At least the Big E has a better class of people still than PLAYLAND,RYE,NY this decade or two...
don't get me started on Remenising <sp> ?.

Hope this falls into " remember when "
When I was young, it would take our family 6 hours to travel from Hartford to Rutland, VT. There were no 65 mph roads then it was Rt. 10, Rt. 5 or Rt.1.Of course, being little, the question was always " are we there yet? " I do remember stopping a roadside " fast food " places ( not allow to mention name but they sold root beer :-)) ) and what a treat it was to stop. Another thing that you can't experience now is the smell of the land. Granted there were areas my family travel through that we could have done without the smells but these days, at 65mph, smells are different..... mostly truck fuel.

My MOST memorable event at the Meriden Expo was a scuba diving exhibition. When the diver demonstrated how to clear out the mouthpiece, he blew out a bunch of air and when the bubbles cleared, he had a foot long snot hanging out of his nose which really entertained the crowd. (especially the ones who were eating.)

I had forgotten all about them. I do remember going downtown for a couple of years in a row anyway. Must have been ok and somewhat fun but I cant honestly remember what I saw or did.
Not sure what eventually happened to the event then but then again I dont remember missing it either.
