HI - Just wondering parents opinions on Platt/Maloney....my stepdaughter may be coming out here next year and she'd end up at Platt as a freshman unless we move elsewhere in town and then she may end up at maloney.. not sure yet....
So just wondering about any opinions on the schools... I saw a couple websites that give reviews and they say the grad rate is 89% in this district which is pretty good.
thx :)

I am a student at Maloney and the school is ok, Platt and Maloney are the same pretty much. My mother recently wrote the school board of education a letter about my CAPT scores and they didn't respond at all. My science score was 2 points bellow goal level and it was because of my Labs. She wrote that in high school at Maloney the classes are so crowded that we couldn't do very many labs and that is why the score was low, now this year I am taking Chemestry but my class is in a biology class room and all we do is take notes all day so we don't do Labs either. I'm not good at science I never really cared about learning about it so een if I had done more Labs last year I don't know if it would've helped but its just something to think about. I don't know if Platt has the same over crowded problem though, I'd thought I'd let you know.

I'm a former student of Platt High School. I'm assuming the roofing situation is still pretty bad. I know when I was there tiles were falling on teacher's heads in the middle of class. Both schools are the same structure wise and academically as far as graduation requirements.

Are you sure the graduation rate is that high? I had two in Platt not long ago - the dropout rate I thought for Meriden High Schools was higher than 11%. In my experience, if your child is well grounded, they can do OK but if they're not, Platt in particular holds a lot of potential for them falling off the face of the earth. You might want to look into the tardy rate. It used to be awful and the attendance rate wasn't great either. However, my cousin's kids did really well - ended up in Ivy league colleges. They were really focused.

The 89% was definitely the right # - but it's an average of the district. The schools where my step daughter would be going if she stayed in Chicago have a 50% graduation rate so this is a HUGE improvement... and she says she wants to be here because the schools are better, so hopefully she will be focused if she comes...
Thx

You can check out www.greatschools.net for info on test scores and some reviews by parents and students.
Both buildings are in need of physical repair. When I attended an event at Platt about 2 years ago, the ceiling tiles were falling down, and the roof was leaking.
I know Maloney has a good band program. I know a few parents who have students at Platt and they have no major complaints or issues.

I know of two Platt grads who have attended Brown, Duke & Oberlin. The Brown/Duke student was also accepted at Yale.

there is no doubt that a good part of an education is enviromental, but I believe a person that wants to learn will learn.
The schools are very similar but offer quite allot. There are several sports teams for compettion (2 varsity teams in the city compared to 1 in Southington), clubs, social groups, and more. Platt and Maloney are going through the same stuff everyone else is going through in the US. That is coping with NCLB. The true spirit of NCLB is great, however, there is a lack of funding and the push to make the grades has forced schools to focus more on core curriculum and learning to take and pass tests. Hey Amity and Cheshire were (not sure if they still are) considered failing schools. Platt & Maloney will offer your child a great opportunity, a free education. What is done with it, is simply up to you/her.

Yes, they are good ! They are despite how flipid teens are in school with the attitude that life is one big house party . Back on track , she must take school seriously by doing well academically , looking good ; in contrast to trying to "make a statement" or nowadays , too "totally fly".
Life after graduation will be a different kettle of fish . And here are some exapmples ; She does not have to go away to college. In contrast, she can work two (2) part-tme jobs and go part-time.From the colleges' standpoint , they are good ,even the private four-year ones with part-time students.By doing it this way , she will not be burdoned with a monster loan to pay off .And she can pay for everything she would need without that much help. *Consider it *
