Several weeks ago I was driving to a friends house. I made a wrong turn and got lost and ended up on West Main Street in Meriden. I stopped in the Stop & Shop. After looking around, I stopped at the Customer Service Desk. I said to the woman behind the counter "Do you have a map of Meriden I could look at or Would you be able to give me directions to the Chamberlain Highway?" She said "No. Go buy a map. They're around the corner."

I walked away with thoughts of anger. I was thinking I work at Price Chopper on Queen Street in Southington and if I ever talked like that to a customer I'd be fired.

So I went to the maps they were selling. I unfolded one and was struggling to find Meriden. It was a map that had several other cities on it besides Meriden. Lucky for me a gentleman who was leaving the store asked me where I need to go. When I told him the Chamberlain Highway he told me it was just down the street. I thanked him, folded up the map and left the store.

A rude clerk but more importantly, a kind and helpful stranger. Sometimes things just balance out.

I hope that clerk never has to ask for directions from me!
Rudeness seems to be the norm these days. It's an always 'in your face' attitude that one seems to encounter because of the media hyping this kind of behaviour.
I did have a good experience at the Home Depot last week. I was looking for a light bulb and asked a young associate where I might find one. He stopped what he was doing and took me to the exact place. This fellow could have been my grandson, but it goes to show that not all young people are rude!

I wrote several months ago that I always carry dollar coins with me and give them out to any one who takes the time to do a kindness our go out of the way to help some one. When I do see this I hand the person a silver dollar and tell them to pass it on to some one that they see doing a nice thing for themselves or some one else.
Sad to say I've only given away about 7 or 8 since Jan.
I do believe that there are a lot of good people out there and do know many that fit this discription, but the majority seems to be self obsorbed and can't be bothered to even be civil.
But being a pollyana I'll keep looking, so the next elder you incounter try to do a kind thing. It could make you a dollar richer.

A simple smile and a thank you is all I need when I'm kind to someone. Not receiving a smile or a thank you after doing something nice however burns me up. Remember, kindness is contagious.

The kindness of some people and the spite and bitterness of others. It just goes to show that everybodys different and some people are more understanding than others!
