While I don't live in Meriden, I recently visited friends and family
there and read in the Record Journal that the same incredibly
disturbing email that caused much controversy recently in my hometown
of Fresno, California, is now the subject of debate in Meriden as
well.

In Fresno, this "Proud to be White" email was forwarded by a school
district employee to fellow employees. When several recipients complained about the racist content of the email to school administrators, the perpetrator was asked to resign (which he did, immediately). The school administration in Fresno took the correct action in this matter.

I understand that the person who sent this same email in Meriden is an
elected official who represents the Democrat Party for Meriden. Although members of his delegation have appropriately asked him to resign, I understand he is refusing to step down. How can the Democrat Party do anything other than ask for his resignation? And how can he justify remaining at his post? Why in the world would the Democrat Party, any political party for that matter, want someone who thought this email was suitable to send to colleagues to remain a representative for their party?

The same logic applies in both cases – we in Fresno don't want our
children to think this type of email is appropriate; you in Meriden shouldn't want your elective officials to have anything to do with it either.

Agreed. Papandrea needs to take responsibility for what he did and for the attitude towards minorities that he circulated, and step down. I wonder what long-term impact this will have on his party? His response to date certainly does give the impression that the Meriden Democratic party is a political party for the good old boys and only for the good old boys. His stepping down would alleviate that impression and provide some damage control, but that does not appear to be his prime concern.

I certainly agree with both of you. The State Democratic Central Committee met tonight at seven p.m. up in Hartford tonight - the New Britain Town committee sent them a resolution (vote held last Friday) to censure and take appropriate action with Papandrea. None of which we heard about in the Record-Journal. They're apparently so horrified, and perhaps with justification, over the viciousness of the email and the tremendous outpouring of support for Papandrea by respectable citizens that they shut down letters to the editor on the topic today. I heard the above news by searching the internet and via the grapevine. Hope the Record-Journal doesn't censor the forums. Bet they don't appreciate readers reporting on the news they should be reporting! I'm hoping to get a phone call from a friend who decided to go up to the meeting. Apparently it's open to the public, you just have to sit and be quiet and listen.

Hello...

"The same logic applies in both cases – we in Fresno don't want our

Considering mainstream television / films.. geared towards kids, the
statement canonly be serious if applied to kids under the age of six.

Seriously... spend 5 minutes watching MTV.... listening to the lyrics of' Hip-Hop music ( which ALL kids listen to today ) go to a "teen movie " like
American Pie... duh. Then preach about what kind of crap influences
your children in Fresno...lol

Patsy stays.... deal with it.

I see there is another big section on the paper about this today. Does anyone in the Democratic party seem to care what sort of effect this is having on the reputation of the city?

It would end if he resigned; if he could understand how upset some people are at the content of the email perhaps he would do so for the sake of the democratic party. But he doesn't seem to equate the content of the email as being a valid reason to step down. He doesn't get it. To look on the bright side, as an unaffiliated voter, I must say it is because of "old boys" like him in both parties that cause me to vote for candidates and not party. Both the major parties are infiltrated by this "old boy network." Here in Connecticut we can't vote in the primaries unless we affiliate with either the democratic or republican party. I'd be even more upset by this controversy if I were a democrat; I wish the party luck and godspeed in cleaning up this mess.

Wow! I do believe Bill gets it!!! People can't rail against hip-hop, or movies, or MTV, or even our own government with any degree of success, so they find a "Patsy" to dump all their frustration and anxiety on. All the while feeling like a standup concerned citizen or great parent (or both). What a joke.

Do any of you even know this "good ol' boy" you're dumping on? I thought all you anti-racism bleeding hearts would know a little something more about stereotypes.

Even though I am of Europien ancestry , I see nothing that much wrong with that e-mail. The reason is that it could have been worse, targeting Minority (please correct my spelling and grammer if you need to ) ,for it could have said for example " [group] is bad" , or something similar to that .So,it is not as bad as it sounds .
What shapes my attitude is that I am of Italian and Polish Ancestry being brought up not to challage the majority among all of the concepts(ideas).
