Hello...
Ever been up the Berlin Turnpike to Doogies...
Great 2 Ft long hotdog there !!
Still though.... Guidas is closer and as good as it was 30 +
years ago.
I have Capital hotdogs in New Britain tied with Blackies in Cheshire. Sorry, but nothing in Meriden compares!!

Hello,
Okay guys, enough. You are making me hungry!!! :D
I remember the first place mentioned...across from the old Verdolini's. It was Gus's Diner. Fantastic food. It has since been sold. I don't know if the chili recipe was sold with it. The Village Barn in south Meriden now has the best chili going. If you are 21 or older, that is.
Great! Now i want a chilidog, and a beer!!!
Thanks alot:cool:

Yes I remember benders hot dogs and clams. They were great. Also jaybees had good dogs. Anyone remember the puppy palace (east main st, downtown) or the melody restaurant.
In Meriden, no good dogs. Closest is Captain C's in Wallingford. Believe it or not the Dairy Queen on Broad Street used to serve a decent chili cheese dog. Then this year they went to a new all beef dog. Don't like it.
I usually grill my own Hummels. Delicious!

i remember Benders -
who wants to share their favorite CANNED hot dog chilli? i know this question may be an insult to many, but i just tried "texas pete's" and it wans't that bad. had the consistency of the Gus's [or greeks] that used to be downtown. not near hot enough, but easy to add a 'few' dashes for heat

To answer the original question - it was the Olympia Diner run by the Sirvackis (sp) family; right across the street from Verdolini's restaurant. The building is still there, has hosted a variety of diners and several different owners since Gus, Mike and Chris ran the place.
The Olympia was originally on Grove Street just before the old bowling alleys.
it did have the best hot dogs and 'sauce' as they referred to the ground beef topping.
I could go for one right now, yum O!!

The best dogs around can still be found at Capital Lunch in New Britain on upper main st.
They make thier own meat souce the greek way and you can purchase the souce in pints and quartz to take home.

Old Enough?
I remember buying hotdogs from the Leatherman's Hot Dog Stand in what is today Hubbard Park. The hot dogs were a trifle on the tough side though and irritated our lead teeth fillings..
Actually, there was a place in when I worked in Cheshire known for it relish and forgot the name that people at work would always go to and praise highly; it may have been Blackies if it was near Rt 84.
