With all the excitement about downtown renovations how about we add the Boad Street Monuments to the park that is proposed for the Hub site?
The monuments should be used as a teaching tool to show how we can honor our history and not as traffic landmarks.

I don't think the intent is to keep the Hub site as a park forever; it sounds like a temporary plan. Besides, moving the monuments would be a great expense and probably put them in an area much more susceptible to vandalism. They are pretty much in the public eye on Broad Street 24/7. They are landmarks that don't need to be moved (especially the WWI memorial).

A great idea! We could have a mall just like DC and attract tourists.
Maybe you should run for mayor!!!!

I agree, we should find a better place for the monuments. Somewhere, where people could read them would be nice.
But not where the Hub was. Think of how the area might smell after harbor Brook is uncovered.
I'm praying now for all green lights if I have to drive through there.

Hello...

Leave the Monuments where they are. Put them downtown....lol
and how much does Meriden have in a budget to clean off the spray
paint and grafitti ?

Where they are affords atleast a little protection from vandals.

Yes, lets leave them where they are so they can remain a part of everyones traffice directions and not testement to the sacrifice so many men and women have made to protect our country. lets leave them where they are so anyone brave enough to cross the street can enjoy the history they represent but at the same time carefully stepping over the broken bottles and used drug paraphenalia, and all the while dodging traffic. great idea, what was i thinking?

TJohnL is off his goard! :p I first saw the monuments , back in '93, while lost/disoriented ,heading south on Rt 5/15 to bridgeport and upon reaching the RT 66 intersection at the wee hours, was taken back by the Towns' memorial testement ! I still reflect everytime I pass down from my aboad to see this fine tribute.
As far as th HUB/PARK/abused-River-gorge,,, can you perceive monuments to be taken down in case of a 100 yr flood/ball games not played because of the un-necc. obstruction or future re-developed land use?? Get Real and KISS
as alwayz, all flamez welcome:D

I'm off my gourd when you were going to Bridgeport, ...at night???

Re-locate the mounuments, their testement to our American heroes deserves a better place of honor.

TJ's flame was not even 'worthy'
[he should learn how to use a cross-walk from 'Shop-ta-Drop' without sacrificing his kids to all the supposed Riff-Raff around these parts, if only to gaze upon the Citizens' names there ]

I can't imagine the cost to move them from the perfectly fine location they are now in. Being in an island on busy Broad Street protects them from graffiti and general vandalism. If you tuck them away in an isolated park and away from traffic, they would be easy targets that would soon be desecrated. Besides, they add a lot to the look of the Broad Street area.

And to think that I tried to get a drink of water from there on a Hot July afternoon ?!?!!?!
Oh Well! Back to mah favorite Waterin' Hole

Too bad Stop & Shop didn't incorporate them in the plaza across from where they are now. They'd still be in the same area, just a bit more accessible.

that would have been a GREAT idea and would have made Stop & Shop appear very community orientated -

.........and finally the first respective reply in quite awhile
thank you for your thoughts
