View Full Version : Congratulations, Wallingford DTC!

“It’s a tough night, no doubt about it,” said Vincent Avallone, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee. “I think the charter revision question had a lot to do with it, and I think we got hurt by not having a mayoral candidate,” he said.
Congratulations to Mr. Avallone and all of the “new leadership” of the Wallingford Democratic Town Committee. WTF did you think was going to happen? The Democratic Party had no standard bearer, and therefore no one to focus attention on issues; of course, the DTC did not even bother to bring forth any significant issues that would motivate Democrats to go to the polls. The Party ran 8 candidates for Council when only 6 could be elected, then sat back and watched the candidates sabotage each other. They made no attempt to reconcile with the core of candidates that ran as independents in 2007. The DTC drove its top Council vote-getter, Iris Papale, into retirement. Mike Brodinsky, who was not running for office, was the only person in the public eye who tried to address the Charter Revision issue; but the proponents did such a poor job of educating the public that most people were bewildered by the complexity of the questions. As one Democrat who chose not to vote expressed to me, “Why should I vote? The Democratic Party obviously doesn’t care about this election. Why should I?”

The Republicans, on the other hand, had a standard bearer. They ran as a team, and had a clearly articulated issue (rejection of the Charter Revision) to motivate their faithful to come to the polls. The results? The Republicans humiliated the Democrats for the Council, regained the majority on the Board of Education, and annihilated the Charter Revision proposals by a more than 2-to-1 majority.

As a Democrat, I am embarrassed by the DTC leadership’s incompetence in this election. I commend the Republicans for outmaneuvering the Democrats so effectively; they deserved to win this election. I may not like their policies and decisions; but the Party leadership on the Republican side is obviously far more effective than on the Democratic side.

Maybe it’s time for another leadership change in the Wallingford Democratic Town Committee. Bill Fischer may be gone, but the DTC is still basically controlled by the same people who have been unable to provide effective leadership and unity since 1983. Perhaps some new blood at the top might reinvigorate the Party.

Ditto

If you dont run a candidate, dont complain that none of your people show up to vote. Last night results were entirely predictable. The democrats running for council suffered. They could have saved a lot of money by not running anybody. Then we could have an election like Afghanistan.

I sometimes wonder if the local Democratic party is run by Republicans. I think the term "democratic leadership" is an oxymoron.

Bustopher Jones, I am hoping you'll considered getting involved directly if you are not already within the party (I don't know you beyond your screen name here).

If you feel there needs to be a change then the party and the committee will need to hear it from the rank and file - that is the only way change occurs.

There will be new elections of committee members in January - I hope that you might consider it (again - if you're not already a member or otherwise engaged).

I would extend the same encouragement to you too flatrat to get involved.

Low voter turnout certainly didn't help the cause - I am going to pull the total voter turnout numbers as soon as I can get them but I am certain it was the lowest percentage turnout in as many years that I have data:

2001
Town of Wallingford total number of names on official check list: 25,635
Town of Wallingford total number of names checked as having voted: 11,036
Town of Wallingford turnout percentage: 43.1%

2003
Town of Wallingford total number of names on official check list: 24,825
Town of Wallingford total number of names checked as having voted: 12,389

Town of Wallingford total number of names on official check list: 26,718
Town of Wallingford total number of names checked as having voted: 12,719

Actually, gunderstone, I was a member of the DTC at one time. I was ultimately banished by the DTC leadership for failing to march in lockstep with the Party leadership's line, similar to what happened to your dad (one of my heroes). Would I be willing to run for the DTC again? Yes, but I doubt that the DTC leadership wants to hear my name again. But I am willing to give it a shot; PM me when you know the time and place, and maybe I can even bribe someone to place my name in nomination.

And, yes, I did vote. I have not missed a single election or referendum in over 4 decades, and despite how disgusted I was with this election, I was not going to spoil a perfect record.

I should be able to get those details - I can post them here when I can
