Former Southington Red Cross executive director Betty Kroher will be presented with the inaugural Southington Humanitarian Award at the annual blood drive held in her honor Oct. 21.

Kroher, according to the award committee, will be recognized for her “unequaled spirit and tireless devotion to the people of Southington” as a volunteer with the Southington Red Cross and subsequently as its first and only paid administrator. She was the executive director of the local chapter for 28 years before it was disbanded in 1992. She has since stayed active as a volunteer for numerous organizations and causes in Southington and Old Saybrook, including the Calvanese Foundation.

The fourth annual blood drive is being hosted by the Polish Falcons Club, 33 Knowles Ave., from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Held each year around the time of Kroher’s birthday, this year’s drive marks the 45th anniversary of her appointment with the Red Cross in 1964. She will be on hand to greet blood donors, friends and former colleagues throughout the day. The award will be presented during a special ceremony at 5 p.m. hosted by Tom Chute, local radio personality and former Red Cross board member.

This year’s raffle prizes – which blood donors are automatically eligible to win – include a family four-pack of tickets to a Hartford Wolf Pack game, the complete first season DVD set of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," a pair of tickets to a UConn football home game and more.
