Who cares???????????//
Show me someone who is doing good for middle class Americans and I'll be interested.
We the middleclass Americans are the forgotten of the world. We pay for everything and our kids die in wars for every third world country and yet no one ever does anything for us. They just expect us to do more and more and give more and more.
America is my country and what I care about not Africa, Korea, andy of the Stans or other countries that just bleed us middeclass Americans dry.
Help and donate to free middle class America from being slaves to the rest of the world!!!!!!!!!

this thread should be under events, not life in wallingford

Respectfully disagree: Why some Wallingford youth or maybe even Seniors are inspired to see the world more globally and finding then so they can participate in a Wallingford TV program about Wallingford in the world -- is about life in Wallingford. But a shout out on event forum may help connect the interested members of the community. Thanks.

For the Record American Samoa is an American territory and most living there would love to be as well off many living in Wallingford. They are Americans so Americans can be free.

You might want to tone down the xenophobia. We may be Americans but we are also humans ie: citizens of the world. If you think that what happens in Africa or China doesn't affect us you are sadly mistaken.
Also since all the politicians court the middle class very aggressively I would hardly say they are "forgotten" . Not to mention that most government programs were designed to promote the middle class and above while leaving the poor to fend for themselves.

the only reason the politicans court the middle class is that we have many votes compared to that of the rich....only reason...middle class can get them reelected....rich can;t....other then our votes there is no real concern for the middle class....and jim n is right that we have to take care of ourselves first....if we don;t then all those of you running around the world and helping other countries will have nothing to come back to.....

At the risk of being accused of being xenophobic, I must concede that I understand some of the frustration Jim N and iwantwallingfordbetter are feeling. There is a stirring of discontent amongst the middle class in this country. We are seeing value-added jobs moving offshore (forcing people to accept lower-paying service jobs in order to survive), savings for retirement decimated by corporate and individual greed, escalating tax burdens to support programs that provide little or no benefit to the taxpayers who support them, etc., etc. Are we citizens of the world? Yes. Should we do what we can to help people the world over? Yes. But let's not lose sight of the fact that this country is in a demoralized state at this point, and middle-class people are becoming more frustrated, more angry, and more discouraged; they want to feel that someone thinks they are important, too.

And what do you do for your country since you are so opposed to helping those from other places? Just curious since you have such a strong opinion about helping others (presumably including those from the country your ancestors came from too).

Wow. This thread certainly took a random turn exposing valid premises that we must Think Globally. Act Locally AND Think Locally, Act Globally and at the very least Think Locally, Act Locally. As posed in the question from Eastside Bill: it is what you do that makes the difference that counts?
That said, still looking for Wallingford residents with global service stories to share.

It never ceases to amaze me how there are always the "holier than thou" pundits who ask such questions in such a condescending tone. But to your question: perhaps you should look around you, right here at home, for the answer. The number of agencies and organizations that help others, and depend on those who volunteer their time and money to support their local and national communities, are too numerous to enumerate here. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, Special Olympics, Make A Wish Foundation, youth sports, inner city programs, Habitat for Humanity, etc., etc...the list goes on and on. The fact is that many (probably most) people contribute to their community in some way or another on a volunteer basis; that they choose to do so at a local, rather than global, level should not be a basis for demeaning or minimizing their contribution.

My question to Jim N was posed because he came across so strongly opposed to helping others with the exception of the middle class from the United States. I certainly did not and would not imply that there is something wrong with working only at a local level. That has been the direction I have taken. I just was curious to see what local causes he supports since he was so adamant about only supporting causes that help the middle class. He never responded.
