My parents don't understand me. What teenager has not complained that they are misunderstood or that their parents just don't know what it is to be cool. "The Namesake" is a slice of life that will resonate with everyone. The story follows an American born boy of Indian descent. His parents are from India and although they have moved to the United States, still retain the cultural mores that they grew up with. Their children, born and raised in the United States, are typical American kids. What sets this movie apart is its heart. The characters draw you into their lives. You care about them and you become emotionally involved in their lives. In a sense, you become one of the family. It doesn't matter what your ethnic background, race, or creed is. The relationships and issues touch everyone. You laugh and cry with the characters. It beautifully allows you to relive your teenage angst and how you didn't understand your parents or appreciate them until you grew up enough to walk in their shoes. And regardless of your age, you can relate to the interpersonal relationships that unfold before you. If you want to laugh and cry, be completely enthralled, and leave the theater with a deeper appreciation of family, "The Namesake" is a not to be missed treat.
