Ghost Party?
Editor:
I thank the R-J for a balanced and factual article on 12/28 – “Meriden’s We the People Party,” commission and boards. It does appear that the Democratic Registrar of Voters (Maureen Flynn) is most confused.
In our bylaws under Section 1: Membership states:
To be a member of Meriden’s We the People Party, you must be a registered voter in the City of Meriden — from any party. Sounds pretty clear! We allow people to keep their party affiliation for the sake of convenience. When it comes to national elections, we don’t want our citizens to have to re-register to vote. We heard what the public was asking for, and responded in kind.
Flynn also mentions that we don’t have any people in our party. That’s odd — we’ve been having town meetings over the last 12 months in South Meriden (anyone/everyone is welcome — the pizza disappears; wow, it must be magic — we even have a full executive board and several committees in place and we have between 20 and 30 ghosts in attendance). Let’s not forget that we secured around 13, 000 votes in the 2007 election (invisible votes, I’m sure)!
As the Democratic Registrar of Voters, I would think that she should be aware of the fact that we are a recognized and registered party with the state of Connecticut and Meriden.
The following was shared with me in a recent conversation: “If a Democrat comes out with a good idea the Republicans shoot it down, because it came from a Democrat – but next year the Republicans will suggest the same idea?
We are all citizens of this great city, and just like in business, we all need to work together to stay healthy and thrive. Meriden’s We the People Party believes in being inclusive, not exclusive.
