Ghost Party?
Editor:

I thank the R-J for a balanced and factual article on 12/28 – “Meriden’s We the People Party,” commission and boards. It does appear that the Democratic Registrar of Voters (Maureen Flynn) is most confused.

In our bylaws under Section 1: Membership states:
To be a member of Meriden’s We the People Party, you must be a registered voter in the City of Meriden — from any party. Sounds pretty clear! We allow people to keep their party affiliation for the sake of convenience. When it comes to national elections, we don’t want our citizens to have to re-register to vote. We heard what the public was asking for, and responded in kind.

Flynn also mentions that we don’t have any people in our party. That’s odd — we’ve been having town meetings over the last 12 months in South Meriden (anyone/everyone is welcome — the pizza disappears; wow, it must be magic — we even have a full executive board and several committees in place and we have between 20 and 30 ghosts in attendance). Let’s not forget that we secured around 13, 000 votes in the 2007 election (invisible votes, I’m sure)!

As the Democratic Registrar of Voters, I would think that she should be aware of the fact that we are a recognized and registered party with the state of Connecticut and Meriden.

The following was shared with me in a recent conversation: “If a Democrat comes out with a good idea the Republicans shoot it down, because it came from a Democrat – but next year the Republicans will suggest the same idea?

We are all citizens of this great city, and just like in business, we all need to work together to stay healthy and thrive. Meriden’s We the People Party believes in being inclusive, not exclusive.

If you are registered as a R, D or U, that is what you are. Until you have a WTP next to your registration name, the group is just a social organization. Every organization has by-laws that can say any nonsense.
Besides that, it appears the only thing that will be accomplised is making sure Democrats will be entrenched by splitting the votes among non-dem voters.

The election of Shammock was an anomaly.

The ghost party is an appropriate name, since there isn't a ghost of a chance you'll ever accomplish anything.

no party but the dems do well here. The looser republicans only ever managed a seat or two and a few hapless ceremonial mayors. Not that the dems here are all that good either- look at Kogut, that heavy guy from S Murdin and the quiet guy next to him.
