Feeble commentary
Editor:

I want to respond to Wallingford writer Stephen Knight’s R-J, 9/19 opinion letter related to the Veterans Service Center, Barbara Thompson and the woman vice-presidential candidate. With letter-writers such as Knight, Thompson and the candidate don’t need enemies.

Knight, in a feeble attempt to compare the above two woman, states that Thompson was accused of being a “party insider.” I failed to see what point he had in light of the fact she was a political insider and still is. That, and Mayor Dickinson’s job offer letter to Thompson and addendum to the letter, is what got Dickinson into hot water.

Knight also states the following: “Similarly, the national candidate for VP has been accused, despite being governor of the nation’s largest state, of a lack of experience.” Again, what is his point? Knight should be able to come up with something better than that. Alaska has a population of 670,000 compared to Connecticut’s population of over 3.5 million. Being governor of the state with the largest land mass does not translate to experience with people.
Knight’s reference to strong, attractive women in leadership roles, and his weak attempt at humor in making a derogatory remark related to a woman columnist’s first name, is an insult to all of the readers at the Record-Journal.

I expect more from Knight, and expect him to step up to the plate as he has done in the past. Spinning facts and alluding to attractive candidates does not add to Knight’s otherwise good reputation.

Lastly, Knight wonders what is really motivating all the journalists, bloggers, public officials and town committee chairman of a particular political persuasion. Ironically, I have the same question for Knight and Sharon Sanders.

I have great respect for Steve Knight's intellect, and while I rarely agreed with him, I felt that he was a valuable member of the Town Council. Regrettably, his writings do not live up to the same standard. The arrogance that arises from his intellect often leads him to either spin the "facts" to create a "straw man" argument, or to couch the rhetoric of hatred and intolerance in a condescending context. I have learned to pass over his letters, because while his topic may be different, the tone and content remain consistent.
