World wants Obama as president: poll

Posted Tue Sep 9, 2008 10:50pm AEST

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may be struggling to nudge ahead of his Republican rival in polls at home, but people across the world want him in the White House, a BBC poll said.

All 22 countries covered in the poll would prefer to see Senator Obama elected US president ahead of Republican John McCain.

In 17 of the 22 nations, people expect relations between the US and the rest of the world to improve if Senator Obama wins.

More than 22,000 people were questioned by pollster GlobeScan in countries ranging from Australia to India and across Africa, Europe and South America.

The margin in favour of Senator Obama ranged from 9 per cent in India to 82 per cent in Kenya, while an average of 49 per cent across the 22 countries preferred Senator Obama compared with 12 per cent preferring Senator McCain. Some four in 10 did not take a view.

"Large numbers of people around the world clearly like what Barack Obama represents," GlobeScan chairman Doug Miller said.

"Given how negative America's international image is at present, it is quite striking that only one in five think a McCain presidency would improve on the Bush administration's relations with the world."

In the United States, three polls taken since the Republican party convention ended on Thursday (local time) show Senator McCain with a lead of 1 to 4 percentage points - within the margin of error - and two others show the two neck-and-neck.

The countries most optimistic that an Obama presidency would improve relations were America's NATO allies, including Australia (62 per cent).

A similar BBC/Globescan poll conducted ahead of the 2004 U.S presidential election found that, of 35 countries polled, 30 would have preferred to see Democratic nominee John Kerry, rather than the incumbent George Bush, who was elected.

A total of 23,531 people in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, the UAE, Britain and the United States were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone in July and August 2008 for the poll.

That's because the rest of the world doesn't have a short memory like we do.
The rest of the world realizes McCain will be Bush all over again.

How can 75% of our country feel Bush is a poor president, yet want to vote for McSame? I don't understand it.

Can somebody please tell me how McCain will be different than Bush.

You have some good points. Just remember congress sets the policies and laws and can overturn the the President. Why is congress's approval rating lower then Bush's yet the same incompetent members will be elected again? As far as McCain goes he's not tied in with big oil, I also think the Republicans themselves want to get away from the policies of that traitor in there now. McCain and Obama are definitely not the best people for the job. Out of 300 million people we ended up with these 2 losers. However out of the 2 I feel McCain is proven and and is the best choice. I don't trust Obama or his wife at all. I just see a welfare, socialist country if he gets in.
As far as the rest of the world goes, especially the areas mentioned in the original post the way they screw us by stealing our jobs, demanding we send troops and aid all over and never do anything themselves. I would definitely vote for someone who would put America first and I feel that is McCain.

Put American first, but choosing Caribou Barbie, who doesnt even know what the Bush Doctrine is and openly discusses nuclear (or is it NUKU-LAR) was with Russia.

Congress can only overturn the President with a veto proof majority. The Senate doesnt have it. The first six years of Bushworld were a Republican majority. The "do nothing" congress.

Welfare is bad, unless its corporate welfare for the rich investors and oil barons and bankers. Then its OK. Welfare and health care for average Americans is bad. We can afford to bail out Bush's Wall Street buddies. We can afford to spend billions in Iraq chasing Kristol and Wolfowitz's neo-con fantasies. But we cant afford to take care of average Americans. (Remember Katrina? Condi Rice was shopping for shoes while New Orleans flooded.)

Nobody stole our jobs. Our corporate leaders chose to export them to maximize their profits, at the expense of the American worker.

George Bush, John McCain and Cindy McCain all personify the American dream. They were born into wealth.

"No one should ever sit in this office over 70 years old, and that I know" -- Dwight D. Eisenhower

Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth.

Congress should have a lower rating because they haven't done anything in years except spend money and protect themselves individually. They also didn't do thier job which is to prevent the president from abusing his power.
The republicans did whatever Bush wanted, and the democrats were too weak to do anything about it. Both parties have corruption running wild, and both parties need to be reeled in and controlled. The best way to do that in my opinion, is to limit congressman and senators to 2 terms. You serve 2 terms, your done, just like the president. Good luck getting that passed.
Having someone serve for decades is crazy. It's pretty obvious the longer someone holds a position, the easier it is for that person to get around the rules. The president has a term limit, so should congress.

I totally agree Congress should have term limits. Try getting Congress to vote for them. I think both party candidates are running on the premise that the whole system is broke, they just have different approaches to how they might "fix" it. My suspicion is to not have the lobbyists do it. And I think we need to keep our corporate citizens "honest." (dont laugh!)

I did my best not to re-elect Joe Lieberman (I-LIE) to a third term but I failed...and I apologize.
