Poll shows McCain in 5-point lead over Obama
Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:01am EDT

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

Hello....

Wait till he picks his VP.... that lead will vault even higher. Then

again, after the first one on one debate it's over for Obama

and... at least McCain will know " when to push the button "
Better a Hawk than a chicken hawk.

and in closing...

Good to see that your Senator Joe is speaking at the REPUBLICAN
CONVENTION.... must make all his democrat supporters happy.
Guess he's not on Obama's short list for his VP...lol

Yea... I know... Ned would have been there too....lol

if this country is dumb enough to elect the former caged man after what we've been through with little george we will certainly go down the tubes. It will be 4 more years of a bumbling fool at the helm- we just can't take it. Oh Bill- you are often very verbose in these forums- but I see now that you are just another blindly led right winger who will follow any republican they put out there. such a shame- before this you almost seemed like someone with a brain of his own.

Verbose... I like that...lol

Honestly... I'm not now or have never been inclined to embrace the
Republican Party or it's ...employees.

What I find hard to deal with is when the party of my choice moves
down path's that I do not agree with. That and turncoat party
members like Lieberman. He's an embarrassment to all democrats.
Talk abiut a flip flop !!!!

So... whatever I say in this forum, do remember that in the end, I
will never...ever pull the lever of a republican candidate running for
president. Local politics aside...lol

And yes.... this country IS dumb enough to put McCaine in office.

This election shouldn't even be a contest.

Bill- I'm so glad at your answer. Locally- even a diehard liberal like me might pull the dreaded republican lever if the dem is a real fool- and luckily- we all know who the fools are in murdin. As for pres- I'd NEVER vote repub either- in fact, voted twice against reagan the second time he ran. Long story, but my favorite felony moment.

I think the country might wake up- or, id the caged man wins- there will be a day when NONE of us wakes up because he'll make us even more hated in the world and in much moire danger than little george has done. hard as that is to believe, it's true. The man was badly damaged in that cage- still has small bits of bamboo in his fingernails.

There was a poll I saw just yesterday that had Obama 3 points ahead. With this economy, I just can't believe that John McCain can win. But we know how dirty the Republicans are so we will have to see. People these days have a strange habit of voting against what is best for them and the country.

Why is it Democrats have one of two positions when it comes to elections?

1) Republicans are evil
2) The electorate is stupid

You guys realize this isn't how you win elections? You don't move farther to the left to win. You do the opposite, you move to the middle. The fringe left and extreme right wing voters don't win elections.

Here is why Democrats have a tough time winning, they are too busy fighting amongst themselves. While the Republicans, like him or not will circle the wagons and support the candidate.

As a veteran and a liberal; I supported Kerry in 2004. (maybe it's good he lost becuase Edwards has a libido problem.) I didn't like the way J. Corsi treated Kerry, and now he writes a book finding all kinds of evil things about Obama. As a democrat though I will not pick apart Mccain's military record like Corsi did to kerry. (Corsi was rejected by the draft becuase of a skin disase!)You could say he finished at the bottom of his class at Annapolis, but Eisenhower didn't do to well at West Point (nither did US Grant). You could say Mccain crashed five planes in only 20 hours of flight time, but he had the guts to go to Nam when he didn't have too. He spent five and a half years has a POW and deserves a tremendous amount of respect for this. This is just a wild conspircy theory, but I have seen both versions of "The Manchurian Candidate". I hope he wasn't brain washed. I am sure he wasn't. At least I hope.

If McCain wins look around for one of those old bomb shelters they sold in the 50's and 60's cause we might need them. Especially if he picks the arrogant egotistical lieberman as his VP cause all he cares about is Israel and he'd sacrifice every American for that cause. I don't like Obama either however I think he may stop the government's habit of killing American youth for other countries we have no business being in. It's sad out of 300 million people we get these 2 to choose from.

As far as i am concerned, there is only one way that Obama can win....if he puts Hillary on as VP. He can garner alot of votes if he does that. I will admit that I don't like either candidate. As of right now, I would vote for McCain. But, if Obama picks Hillary as VP, he will have my vote. And, I am a strong Democrat. Obama is too wishy washy and does not have enough experience. At least i would trust McCain as a military leader. But, if McCain chooses Lieberman, he won't get my vote either. Joe is too dangerous. So, if McCain chooses Lieberman and Obama chooses someone other than Hillary, I will have to not vote for president or give it a really hard gut check before i pull the lever. Joe L will not be the VP candidate....it will be Tom Ridge as his VP. Binden would be dangerous for Obama....Lets face it, it will be a tough election in which neither candidate stands out.

The next election is very simple in my eyes.

McCain represents much of the Bush 43 years. He will continue where Bush left off. Can anybody honestly say McCain offers a different course than what Bush put us on? Is McCain going to offer us 4 more years of Bush, or will he be his own man with his own ideas? He's another Bush 43.

It's this simple.

If you like Bush and feel he did a good job, then vote for McCain.
If you think Bush was incompetent and hurt our country then how can you vote for McCain? Vote for Obama or someone else other than McSame. Or, don't vote at all.

The Republicans are not in the middle. I would guess that the Democrats are more in the middle because I really don't like what they are doing either. I moved from a middle of the road Republican to a left of center Democrat in just a few years. I don't like either party because both parties are owned by the corporations and special interests. I choose the one who is the lesser of the two evils and for now my choice is Obama.

No, Republicans are felons They are more incompetent than evil...They prefer to have a stupid electorate by being anti-science and anti-education.

But as Presidential candidate John McMansion shows, they have more houses than we do....

And as Michael Moore said, Why does being shot down for bombing innocent civilians make you qualified to be president?

Please keep up the "the electorate are idiots" bleating, we all see how well that worked for you in 2004. Also, McCain himself doesn't own any homes, his wife, her kids and the family business owns many properties as investments.

"The electorate is a bunch of uneducated bible beating idiots, now having said that make sure you vote for us"

He's been in a cage for years being tortured- which is why he'll continue little george's torture policies if elected. He WANTS war. He doesn't know what a gallon o gas costs. He LIES.

Apparently it seems to be the general consensus in this thread that McCain = Bush. This seems also to be solely based on the fact they are both Republicans. Overall the entire presidential race has been the Republicans attacking Obama’s personal affiliations and lack of experience and the Democrat’s blaming Bush for the war, the housing problems and soaring gas prices.
It seems the opposition to the war has an underlying belief that if we didn’t go to war that we as a nation would be safer today than we were 5 1/2 years ago. I don’t know about you but I feel pretty safe, but then again I felt safe before 9/11 too.
I work in the mortgage industry and business has been way down but that’s not from some policy Bush enacting, it is simply the greed of the lender and buyer… period! The market is now correcting.
As far as the gas prices you can blame the Environmental lobby. They have tied the countries hands for decades and are about to put a stranglehold on it pushing the currently popular global-warming theory.
The Saddleback Church forum held a couple weeks ago was a breath of fresh air. It was a great opportunity to compare how each candidate stood on the issues. If you watched it then you know who you are voting for… at least it was clear to me.

They are all likable people (well maybe not Hillary) but the DNC and the RNC are nothing but big pep rallies to simply fire up the masses. I would hope no one is basing their vote on anything heard at either convention. We all should be questioning what we hear and do a little research....don't just blindly follow.

I'll vote democratic even if they resurected John Wayne Gacy and put him up for office. Mccain is a bad man. a literal twin of little george- except for that unsightly bulge on his face.
