Obama and McCain
Editor:

In response to Thomas Fitzgibbons' letter to the editor (R-J, 8/18, see copy below) attacking Senator Obama:

Both candidates have changed their positions after learning new facts. McCain did so, as well, on issues such as pro-life, campaign finance, immigration, ethanol, renewable energy, torture, also changed his position as well on off-shore drilling since his 2000 presidential campaign — and there are many more issues that one can easily look up online.

You just can't accuse Obama of changing his position without also including McCain's many flip-flops. I hope people will look into both candidates equally for themselves when deciding who they will vote for.

Jacki Charette, Plantsville

Obama's inexperience (as published in the R-J, 8/18):
Editor:
The Russian invasion of Georgia and Obama's response show how inept he is. McCain looks in Putin's eyes and sees the KGB and knows how to deal with him.
Obama's position on oil drilling off our own shores changes with poll numbers. He originally opposed drilling off the US coast while Viet Nam, Canada, and China were negotiating for leases with Cuba to drill. He wanted to increase taxes on the oil companies. Since President Bush cancelled the executive order on offshore drilling, gas prices have dropped steadily. Our Congress turned out the lights and went on vacation with mostly Republicans staying there and demanding Speaker Nancy Pelosi bring up the off shore drilling proposal for an up or down vote.
Obama will give America higher taxes, open borders, socialized medicine and bigger government.
THOMAS FITZGIBBONS, MERIDEN

John Mc Cain is just as inexperienced as Barak Obama. He knows nothing about squat except that he likes war. War is not the answer and never has been. Obama has the right idea and goes with what he knows, meaning that he makes his decision along with the facts that are put out. Every one of us has changed their mind with the changing of facts and the introduction of new information. to do otherwise is stupid. As a world we need change and more war is not the answer. Republicans are good people just not real intune to what is going on. In fact they keep bringing this country down notches at a time. For this country to grow as required we need less Republicans and less Democrats but more Unity. A two party system is worthless as is religion in the running of a country.

that first so called "debate" was a joke. Who gave a fool in a hawiaan shirt a direct line to a mythical gawd? The question about evil was especially a joke. and the idiots around applaud the caged man when he says he'd defeat it. If anything- McCain is EVIL. he wants lots of long wars, which he thinks he knows how to win? How?

I agree...our founding fathers went to great lengths to keep religion and government separate. Religious groups who are political action groups should lose their tax exempt status...And Obama did us a disservice by appearing with the California evangeli$t Rick Warren at $addleback church.

I love the Rethugicans citing Obama's lack of experience. Kennedy, Reagan, Carter, Clinton and Bushlet all entered the white house with no experience. A wise man once said "Some people have 20 years of experience. Other people have one year of experience 20 times."

They also railed about Bill Clinton and John Edwards cheating on their wives, but its OK for John McCain.

They made fun of John Kerry's rich wife, but its OK for John "McMansion" McCain....

And after 8 years of Republican rule, they are trying to blame the democrats for the poor economy.

And they almost started WWIII with how they handled the Georgia crisis.

Obama will give "rich" American higher taxes. Middle calls Americans make out much better taxwise under Obama than McCain.

And what is worse, socialized medicine or no medicine? Cant we take some of the billions of dollars Halliburton has defrauded the United States of, and help insure some poor people...That would be the "christian" thing to do.

And there is no government bigger, more intrusive, more disrespectful of our rights and our constitution, than Bushworld.

for me- I don't have to watch ebevn a second of either convention to be able to state that mccain is damaged goods. He lived in a cage for a couple of years for cryin out loud- don't try to tell me that hasn't damaged his mind. PLUS he claims to agree w/ 85% of what little george has done- that ALONE should convince all but the dumbest of republicans that he's a moron.

"our founding fathers went to great lengths to keep religion and government separate"
They did? Where does it state that? The only thing they stated was there wouldn't be a government sponsered religion. A belief in God and Christianity was the foundation for our Constitution.

If you think I am suggesting that founding fathers were atheists, far from it. They did realize the dangers of state religions and went out of their way to articulate that point. The constitution specifically protects all religions, or none, as freedom of religion is also freedom from religion for those rationalists who choose not to take that famous Kierkegaardian "leap of faith."

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god." - Thomas Jefferson (letter to Peter Carr, 10 August 1787)

"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution." - James Madison (Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments, 1785.)

"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.'' - James Madison (Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)

"As to religion, I hold it to be the indispensable duty of government to protect all conscientious protesters thereof, and I know of no other business government has to do therewith." - Thomas Paine (Common Sense, 1776.)

Let me cite here a bit of the constitution. The last one is from the Bill of Rights, George Bush's minor impediment to his war on America, i mean terror. Also note the GWB never took an oath to protect us from terror, he took an oath to defend the constitution.

Article VI: Clause 3: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Article II Section I: Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Worship away, Mr or Ms Arahant, knowing your right to do so is protected.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. - Seneca the Younger

I still like the idea of a line on the ballot that reads, "None Of The Above". If enough people select this option, then both parties have to go back, select ne candidates, and start all over again...:D

don't remember asking you over for a beer. If you are a classic example of a republican, I'd have never even talked to you, so don't feel all superior. Do I have an attitude? Sure thing- after enduring 8 years of little george and his raping of this country I do indeed. And I'd rather not have the republicans run things any further into the ground. and I'd say it to your face as well-it just so happens that you must sit at a keyboard to post here- and that doesn't mean hide behind it. Smarten up=-the republicans are the reason America is in trouble.

As far as I can tell "alwaysright" never posts anything based in fact, it's always some personal attack on McCain or GW. Obviously he/she must feel unhappy with his/her lot in life and chooses to blame the government instead of taking personal responsibility. That seems to be a popular stance these days though so he/she is not alone.

RC12L4...you'll just get frustrated trying to chat with this one. I don't think his/her cognitive reasoning skills have matured fully yet. I pin "alwaysright" for about the 8th grade.

It's ironic that you rant about hateful and evil Republicans yet you're the only person on this board that continually makes hateful and belligerent comments to and about anyone. I've yet to see you make a post that could be taken as well thought out and intelligent, I challenge you to prove me wrong.

I'm sorry that you're such a hate filled person.

In fact, I am very happy in life. Great job with a good pay- and hardly have to work at it. I do, however, have plenty of hatred for republicans. After all- Ronnie-senile. Big and little george- hapless fools with bad records. FACT- little george is/was a coke head and a drunk. how's that for a fact?

and FACT- McCain was in a cage for 5 years- post traumatic stress syndrome.

I don't post for any other reason than to aggrivate you republicans- and FACT- it seems to work.

OH yes- FACT- the new VP nominee from the republican party has a daughter with a baby on then way- no husband, and only 17. nice choice.

Of course you can provide some sort of information proving this fact, other than a link to a left wing liberal blog. Of course you can't

and FACT- McCain was in a cage for 5 years- post traumatic stress syndrome.
It's nice to know what you really think of our military folks serving this country. According to you every person who served on the front lines in Iraq are damaged goods and should be cast off as disposable. After all you don't have to be a POW to suffer from PTSD.

I don't post for any other reason than to aggrivate you republicans- and FACT- it seems to work.
You don't aggravate me if anything I pity you.

Are you implying that any teen mother is a disgrace to herself and her parents? That belief seems to fall more inline with wingnut christian bible beating conservatives that you rail against, maybe your anger comes from your subconscious conservative side having a battle with your public liberal opinion. Then again maybe you're just a hypocrite.

So in closing please continue to contradict yourself with more posts, it's entertaining.

Oh I forgot this is the internet. Here everyone is a millionaire, lives in a mansion, drives a Porsche and is married to a super model. Voted twice in the same election? You sound more and more like the corrupt Republicans you rant about, I'm telling you it's your conservative self conscience colliding with your liberal attitude that is making you so bitter.

I still pity you, so consumed with hate.
