Mayor questioned
Editor:

The public would like Meriden Mayor Mike Rohde’s commentary on the following:

What would Rohde say if President Bush held a monthly press session and would only answer a scripted cowardly farce like the one at city hall?

What does Rohde think of the school superintendent getting that huge raise? What about her earning more than Governor Rell?

When was the last time Rohde visited the soup kitchen, the homeless shelter or any of the city’s four projects? What has Rohde to say about the city paying $100,000 for the Grove St. bowling alleys and the cost to make it a parking lot (which will exceed over $150,000)? Did he or any council members look it over or just rubber-stamp this fiasco? What has Rohde done for the older people on fixed incomes (whose taxes he voted for) besides ignore their plight?

What does Rohde think about time clocks for teachers and all school administrators? When I heard some of these people work until midnight, I was appalled. What does he think of the city manager, former mayor and city councilor talking about some city homes seeing a decrease in taxes when it was only three homes out of about 16,000?

What does Rohde think about the chief of police and his recently-promoted brother and anyone else in the police department who work in Meriden but reside elsewhere?

What about my suggestion for people who wish to help the school funding, like the former mayor and Councilman Dominello, being able to make donations? What has Rohde done about it?

What has Rohde to say when the former mayor resigns and there is talk of him returning to apply for the school superintendent’s job before it is vacant?

Rohde’s reply in print would be appreciated.
LOUIS PAPALLO, MERIDEN

Does every councilor have to answer these questions, or is it just an attack on Rhode?

I've never read anything but negative comments coming from this man. If those questions were asked in good faith he would've sent them in a direct letter to the Mayor or called the office to set up an appointment to discuss them in person. There is no reply good enough for him (regardless of which local offical answers him).

What a laundry list of angry complaints. I don't know where Rhode could start. This writer is not "the public" as be portrays himself, just someone who probably would never want answers to his questions anyway. Some people just like to complain.

Even if his questions were answered he would complain they were not the right answers

So what are we to deduce from the rhode love on this string? That these are true supporters of the man? or that these people actually feel that the council DOES listen to the public. Which, by the way, is made up of individuals who all want their questions answered and maybe even their voices heard.
Murdin will NEVER get a decent mayor until we change to a strong mayor system. We have now a ribbon cutter job with people way too ambitious to take that kind of role. Their veto is the only weapon they have so they swing it around like a club. Let us all just look at the terrible record of messups that this and several councils before this have out upon the citizens of the town. A total waste of big money for a stadium that, at best, will be "filled" with a couple hundred observers. A downtown that for a couple weeks looked nice when medco got through wasting millions of dollars because although well intentioned, they were a bunch of amateur bumblers who bought into the bumpouts and frilly streetlamps as a way to save downtown- then didn't market it above a silly cookie based ad campaign. Now, they want to spend even more on a pipedream.
How can we continue to waste money?
The problem is- the republicans have not put up a worthy candidate for ANY position in many years. The We the People Party is kind of a small joke and the dems have had way too long as the only party on the hill. I know- some will ask "why don't you suggestsomething instead of complaining" well that's what this forum is for- complaining.

Alwaysright (that screen name says a lot), I don't anyone was expressing love for Rhode, just that this letter was a rant. And let's hope that this forum is for much more than complaining!

A strong mayor system is no guarantee of a decent mayor. I shudder at the thought of someone like Marinan having that much power.

Just because you know you're standing knee-deep in cow poop doesn't make it the best place to stand!
