My appology folks [ Bad URL from memory] but as published on the ConnPost - A rare gem ... and the correct link is at the end of this excerpt ... like CSlib.org/...

''But even this beautiful new highway had its ugly side. At the beginning of the project, MacDonald appointed Darien real estate agent G. Leroy Kemp as the official state land purchaser. Kemp and his associates bought land at inflated prices, and split the large commissions. "They made a lot of money," Jones said.

Eventually, Kemp was indicted on charges of conspiracy to divide real estate commissions. He was eventually found guilty and served four years in jail.

Despite the scandal, the Merritt project was completed. The first section, which was 17.5 miles long, opened to the public on June 29, 1938. The rest was opened on Sept. 2, 1940. When it opened, Jones said, the Merritt was hailed as the "Queen of the Parkways."

"It was the biggest gem in the state for a while," he said.

The past 70 years have taken their toll, however. As Fairfield County continued to develop, more traffic poured onto the Merritt Parkway. Today, travelers along the highway are more likely to remark on traffic backups than the view.

"The growth of Fairfield County made people look at the Merritt Parkway as a transit corridor and not a beautiful, scenic highway," said Jill Smyth, executive director of the Stamford-based Merritt Parkway Conservancy, which works to preserve and protect the historic roadway.

Meanwhile, the library exhibit brings the back the triumph and drama of the highway's early days. "The Merritt is such a beautiful road and continues to be talked about today," Newell said.
