Good Morning Meriden Community,

I believe in the concept "it takes a village to raise a child" and It will take the "village" of Meriden to help raise our children to be productive citizens in society and to help keep them safe as they are growing and learning those self-sufficient tools

Parents, Youth, Community Leaders, Small Business, Corporations, Educators, Faith-Based, Advocates, and Elected Officials are all called to "Action" in educating our children about the importance of education and the learning and following of safety tips to help keep kids and their family safe this summer and learning about safety as a whole.

Safety can not be taught in bits and pieces and by a select few. It needs to flood the airways and community as a consistent message.

Society has a pattern of being in crisis mode versus preventive and intervention mode. We will have to shift our community outreach strategies, if we want to engage the minds of our youth early on, as young as pre-school, “the earlier the better”, as they say.

When a business wants us to “buy” a product, they flood the airways and newspapers with the product with all types of “catchy phrases” and gimmicks, why not use that same strategy to educate and engage the youth and encouraging parental involvement. As a community, it’s a low cost to no cost method because we have a “unified message” of “Think Safety” and we encourage “all” to be involved.

The Meriden Community has already had a seven year old rushed to the hospital because of a bicycle accident in the summer of 2008, lets be proactive as opposed to reactive!!!!

With schools dismissed for the summer and summer activities in full swing, the Meriden Kids Walk Safe Coalition would like to remind Meriden residents to be extra cautious and watch out for kids this summer.
During the summer months, children are spending more time outdoors and the risks to child safety are heightened. Parents & motorist need to be extra vigilant!!!
National estimates indicate that children ages 14 and under will be rushed to emergency rooms nearly 3 million times this summer for serious injuries resulting from:
• Motor vehicle crashes
• Drowning
• Bike crashes
• Pedestrian incidents
• Falls and other hazards
As a result of increased summer activities, The Meriden Kids Walk Safe Coalition is hosting a” Kids Safe Summer Karnival” to bring awareness to the importance of learning and following important summer safety tips. MKWS hopes to make this summer season a safe and enjoyable time for everyone.

I have committed myself to the village, how about you??

We sorry a child was hurt, but where were the parent/parents, there is a helmet law and why in the world was he riding his bike in the streets, at that age, with no supervision. We can’t tell you how many times we drive though Meriden and almost hit a child darting in and out of traffic. Then you see these same parent/parents riding around blasting their music, chewing on a cell phone, speeding and their kids are not in seat belts. And putting more sighs and making new laws isn’t going to help, Police do not have the resources to deal with this .We also think it’s kind of funny that these same parent/parents are the first ones to arrive on the scene when their kids are hurt, with a lawyer in close by. Maybe you get a better response if this thread says, it's takes a village to raise reasonable parent/parents!
