View Full Version : Mallard Fillmore & the Record Journal

The problem with Mallard Fillmore is not only is it offensive, mean spirited and poorly drawn, it isn't a clever or funny comic strip. Doonesbury is well done. Mallard Fillmore just doesn't come close to that level of quality. If there is a feeling by the Record Journal that there must be a comic to balance Doonesbury's views, there must be something else out there that at least has some artistic value. Mallard Fillmore just isn't a good comic strip. Why does the Record Journal use our subscription money to pay for its rantings and put it on the comics page?
Why Doonesbury is relegated to the editorial page and Mallard Fillmore gets the comics page is the other question. Why the different treatment? If The Record Journal is so enamored with Mallard Fillmore's views, at least put it with the other political cartoons.

Can you elaborate what "in the future" means? That's a pretty open-ended timeline!

Can you elaborate what "in the future" means? That's a pretty open-ended timeline!. must mean 'We'll see! if any other citizenz respond.' But, as a life-long independent Bleeding-Heart Liberal [who supported the idealistict Soviet ways and yet served to break the Cold-War under republicans], I find Mallard more artistic ! With a Quicker message than the long story 'CARTOON' [liberal?] on the Editorial page, which I am drawn to read every day to get the pulse on the populace. All Flames welcome

Bill decided to go "semi-retirement"
http://homepage.mac.com/billamend/
The other option for him I suppose was to fully retire and disappear altogether like Bill Watterson did; leaving us forever with no more Calvin and Hobbes
SNIFF, SNIFF
I miss them

:( Miss them too! I guess 'EastSide' is right, leave the funnies to the LaGuadia page and the Mud-Slingers on the Op-Ed pages, and don't let yer babies turn out to be Neo-Cons ![nor Left-wing] j/k, but I do recall a celebrity that complained about the recent cartoon MOVIE about Penquines with Happy Feet misrepresenting itself, only to be another bleedin'heart Liberal Neo-Green envionmentalist plea to the younger generation for Global-Warming Awareness. But, nevermind, they can finally go out sleding now the we have a sign of 'normalcy'? [second snow-storm this WINTER]

What do you guys think about that new strip "Lio"? I just don't get it most of the time.

:D IMHO, this new addition may be more appreciated by those that claim, not to remember the 60's, or those that claim to know the 60's. At least it doesn't belong in the want ads, but in the Funniez! 'Lio' is a must read of the 4 strips that I look for !
ps: And I'm a friend of Mort Walkers son, and don't even care for Beetle Baily that much and I tried to get the 'SNUFFY' strip back, among others like 'IGNATZ' , 'Mutt n' Jeff' .
as alwayz, All Flamez Welcome.

I like Lio. It is well drawn, kind of cute, and imaginative. I like Beetle Bailey too, although I'm not sure why. It is a pretty dated dinosaur.
However (not to sound like a broken record) I still don't understand why the Record Journal keeps running one very conservative political comic on the comics page without trying to balance it out. It is very curious why "Doonesbury" ends up on the editorial page (it is on the comics page in the Hartford Courant) but "Mallard Fillmore" stays on the comics page. It would be nice if the editors would explain in the print version of the paper the rationale for doing this. My guess, though, that it is something they will consider "in the future."

Why do they need balance? Free press means free to report what they choose in the manner they choose. The Courant is a little to the left of the old Soviet newspaper Pravda and they do things the way they want. The RJ does things the way they want to. Wouldn't it be boring if everyone did things the same way.
I'd like to see "Get Fuzzy" in the comics.;)

I too find Mallard Fillmore lame and tasteless...but then lame and tasteless seems to be the current standard.
Not sure I support its removal if some people enjoy it though...Maybe a RJ poll on readers' 5 favorites and 5 least favorites would add clarity to the issue? I generally skip the comics and find my humor elsewhere.

I think it means "Thanks, but no thanks".

Where did you get the idea that we have a "Free Press"? All media bow to their advertisers and their owners(who are now big corporations).

I hope that if I keep mentioning "Free Press" someday it may wake up the silent majority when they realize the haven't heard anything free in years.
I realize the time of Woodward and Bernstein was probably the last gasp of something called "Free Press" I have to keep dreaming and hoping because I believe you lose your dreams you die. Also it's not just the advertisers. Check out the BBC and their reports that Bush & Cheney have 70 gag orders against the press in Iraq.
At least the R-J provides this forum for a free exchange of ideas. I also enjoy blogging where I can write what I choose and hope people read it.

I think it means "Thanks, but no thanks".
I think it means "when hell freezes over" since that was posted on 2/1/07 and this comic strip remains in its prominent position. It is strange that the most overt political cartoon in the RJ still stays on the comics page. Were it funny and clever and well drawn, there would be less to object to. It isn't though. If the RJ feels it is important to subscribe to this comic, I'd much rather see it moved to the classified and "Lio," which is well drawn and clever, moved to the comics page. Maybe the RJ will consider that "in the future."
It would be responsive if the RJ would explain why this particular political cartoon gets this special treatment (and no, "Doonesbury," while occasionally political, is nowhere as politically overt as "Mallard Fillmore." Perhaps an explanation is forthcoming "in the future."

The title says it all. Probably one of the, if not the best, political cartoonists of the 20th century. He could say more in one illustrated panel than volumes of rhetoric written by any journalist I have ever seen.
Lio is a little strange until you understand where it's coming from. This morning's strip was very funny. Last of the Mohicans indeed!
Beetle Baily has always been one of my favorites. Can you imagine being a Private for the length of time he has been? Or for that matter how about Gen. Halftrack or Sgt. Snorkle? I would like to have their military pensions! The General must be 150 years old by now!
I would like to have a dollar for every foxhole Beetle has dug!
Lighten up, people. After all this is supposed to be humor or satire and where else in this world can you get that and read it without looking over your shoulder?
You can thank our military for that and not the politicians!
