Falcon Field a flop?
Editor:
I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who played a role in making the dream of a top-notch sporting complex in the city of Meriden come to realization at the site of Falcon Field. The idea of such a facility in town had been debated and scrutinized for close to two decades.
Thanks to the persistence, hard work, and willingness to speak out (for what is best for “our kids”) by many members of this community, Meriden will soon have a facility that will be the envy of towns across the state. This should be a time of celebration and excitement for those in town who are fans of high school athletics, or really any residents who are for positive change in this city.
It seems that somewhere along the way, the idea of creating something extraordinary from this complex for the student-athletes of Meriden has degenerated to merely a reality of an unenthusiastic approach of perfunctorily scheduling events at Falcon with no ambition for generating a buzz and drawing out the masses. The approach being taken for the opening ceremonies at Falcon seems no different from the mindset of opening another season at the old Ceppa field, and that is a shame. Why waste such a great opportunity?
A recently proposed “opening week” at Falcon would showcase this field and make its unveiling an event. A football double-header, to me, fits well in this scenario; why not draw potential fans of four area teams on one night? Why not free up a day so another team(s) can take advantage of a field so many have worked hard to make a reality? Why not make the most of a resource we are so lucky to have? Why not make it a week-long celebration of Meriden’s student-athletes?
