‘Indirect’ Dickinson
Editor:
Wallingford Mayor Bill Dickinson’s jitters over “direct deposit” are utterly ridiculous. In my 10 years in the Navy and Navy Reserves, I was required (yes, required) to have direct deposit, and in my current UTC job, I am again required to have DDS. Never in the 15 years since I left college have I had a single incidence of difficulty receiving my paycheck.
The idea that forcing all town employees to have the same pay period is a legitimate obstacle to progress is mind-boggling. It certainly isn't some type of civil rights violation. I wonder, does His Honor still require the town paymaster to sign the checks with a quill pen and inkwell, rather than new-fangled ball points? Does he think computers are still the size of a room and use vacuum tubes and punch cards? I wonder if he insists that his grocery store cashiers key-in prices rather than use bar code scanners. Does he use an ATM card, I wonder, or does he keep his “walking-around” money in his shoe? I'm surprised we even have telephones in town hall.
While every new technology shouldn't be implemented immediately and mindlessly, this Luddite-ism has got to stop. The joke is over, and it isn't cute anymore.
