Mayor from Mars
Editor:
In response to writer John E. DeMayo's published R-J letter of 4/27:
"If the DTC (Democratic Town Committee) would put forward Walt (Micowski), then no voters would feel disenfranchised. Otherwise, none of the votes cast for mayor mean anything."
Walter Micowski for Mayor of Meriden? I wouldn't vote for Walter Micowski for mayor if my life depended upon it and the one he was running against was from Mars.
KIM MORRIS, MERIDEN
This makes two votes for a Martian!!

If Walt Micowski were elected mayor of Meriden over a Martian, would the angry planet strike back?!
Wouldn't be an issue if they targeted theMayor's office!;)

I know very little about the race, but a Martian is probably as good as any politician.

Before we get too far out of orbit, does anyone have ideas on who would make the best choice for Meriden's mayor, if not a super-brilliant, green-with-envy Martian?
Come to think of it, "Mayor Martian" has a certian ring to it, yes? ;)

The more I think about it, I think Councilman Daniels would be a good choice. I really like how vocal he has been as a first time councilman. I do not always agree with his positions but he always seems to understand the issues and puts forth lucid and clear statements to support his position.
 That is exactly what the Daniels benefactors are hoping for. He has done nothing for the city except run for city council 6 months ago somehow raising more money form some powerful people who are hoping for a "nice" return on their investment. At least Rohde has worked at times on some good things for our town. Please lets nominate a martian before Daniels ever gets a smell of the Mayor's office!!!
A few years ago, I saw Rhode riding his bike on Pratt Street. I stopped to talk to him, and found out that he often rides around the City to get a feel for the different neighborhoods. He was headed to Hobart Street, and then to the City Park area. I was impressed, especially considering it wasn't during election time, nor was it something he bragged about. It was a quiet, effective way to get in touch with Meriden. How many other councilors would do this? He's got my support.

I must admit I did not know that Councilman Rhode had this side to him. If this is a true story, it really makes me think about Rhode as a possible choice.
Additionally, I will agree with RAC that Daniels raising 18,000 for a city council seat that pays 2000 is somewhat absurd. I only meant to point out that he has taken a fairly active posture for a freshman councilor,

If it is Micowski v. Martian, we'll have the first true alien mayor.
He wore a helmet, so it was hard to recognize him. Since the chat we had, I spotted him several other times as well. Even teased him about those damn bike shorts!

Daniels doesn't have the experience. Did anyone notice the mayor telling Daniels "you can smirk all you want to" at a recent council meeting? Hmmm...

I did notice that and found it amusing. I think that was probably more a function of the Mayor knowing in his heart that he is a short timer and not really caring about the council's perception anymore.

The Democrats appear to have made their choice if Rhode is chosen mayor, yet I have not seen anything reported in the R-J. It may have an impact on Councilors vote for mayor.

Maybe Hillary will move into Area 2 (similar to her move to New York) and the DEMS will appoint her to the vacant seat if she loses the primary.

There was an ethics board meeting this week. That went uncovered by the paper but perhaps they were reviewing this Dominello getting two votes question. It will be interesting to see if we get a public meeting with the opportunity to question the candidates. I'm starting to think we won't.

Collie: I am new to this forum but I have taken the time to read a large part of the various threads. I am surprised that you would hope that the council would provide any type of question and answer session for the potential mayoral candidates. The selection of the new mayor, I suspect will have more to do with party loyalty and political gain as opposed to true concern for the voters of Meriden. However, I voted for the majority of the council members, so I guess, I only have myself to blame for this.

Here's betting that Shamock won't vote for anybody else but Micowski, the Democrat he ran with for We the People.

To Mr. C.E.P.
Sara Schmidt, a social worker at the Child Guidance Center, was recently quoted in the paper as saying she hoped their would be a public forum, so citizens could see where the candidates stood on the issues. Rohde and Zerio both said they would agree to participate in such an event. That's why I thought it might happen.

Collie:
Do not get me wrong, I hope the event does occur. Perhaps, I am somewhat jaded and tended to look for the negative. However, Mayor Mark is leaving June 30, so I am not sure when this forum would occur as time seems to be marching slowly forward without any answer from the council. I think such a forum is vital.

I believe he defeated you very soundly in Area III, so arguable he expresses the wishes of the people, from his area, more than you.
