As a senior in the Maloney High School community and past officer of the Diversity Club, I feel obligated to write this. Let me begin by saying that I do see the value in creating a safe environment for all members of our school community and believe that it is necessary for student productivity. However, I must voice my opposition to the recently founded Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Maloney.

Two years ago, the Diversity Club was brought the proposal for the GSA because there was concern about the two clubs simultaneously existing. It was the preferred feeling of those involved that the two co-operate, with the GSA being a subset of the Diversity Club. In Maloney history, the Diversity Club has served as a valuable meeting place for all types of people, whether the distinction is made on race, sexuality, religion, etc.

It is my fear that if the GSA continues to exist separate from the Diversity Club, it will eventually bring an end to the Diversity Club at Maloney. With the racial divides still present at the school, the Diversity Club is an indispensable resource.

However, there is certainly a need in the school community for both clubs and I do not advocate the abolishment of the GSA. Instead, I support the suggestion of two years prior that the GSA and Diversity Club work together as one to increase awareness of all types of discrimination. It is my hope that the momentum of the GSA can help play a role in promoting an all-encompassing sense of acceptance. Together, the clubs have the potential to change Maloney for the better. To unite the students, let us first unite the clubs.
