On December 25th, 2006 a former resident, Rita Katona, of Wallingford, died and on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 a lengthy obituary appeared in the Record Journal. I know the information contained in that obitituary was supplied by the family but I think there was a rather important piece of information that did not appear. Having know Rita I suspect she would be proud for people to have know that she was a former member of the John Birch Society, as I was. For the uninformed or misinformed, the John Birch Society was named after Captain John Birch of the United States Army who was the first soldier to be killed in Korea by the North Korean and Chinese communists. The John Birch Society was an educational, anti-communist organization that had as it's motto, "Less government, more individual responsibility". It's purpose was to inform people of the dangers of worldwide communisim. I think that Rita and I and many others, were in part responsible for the fall of the Berlin wall which freed millions from the tyranny and oppression of communist governments. For that reason Rita, who was an outstanding humanitarian and leader, should be viewed as a true patriot whose contributions will be remembered always.
